76 CV joints

Hi all
I've read through the archives and still have a question. My 76 911s started with the clunk which is well described as time to change out a cv joint. Anyway I pulled the wheels and to my dismay I couldn't figure out which side, let alone which one is in need of replacing.

Is there some little trick to telling which one or side is bad?
Thanks in advance
Rob

Have you tried lifting the rear off the gound and rocking the axel back and fourth with your hand, if recall you can feel the worn one

Believe me I've been doing a lot of that. I was thinking about putting the wheels back on with the jackstands inplace then let it turn a little in gear (running) to see if I can better locate the clunk
