Fan on the back of the ashtray?

What the heck is the little fan located near the back of the ashtray in my 89 930? I looked briefly in PET and couldn't find it off hand. It runs when the ignition is on and it's very small and quiet.

I never even noticed it but today I was reaching around under there while trying to locate a rattle and I felt the blades spinning. It's a bit like a squirell-cage and appears factory.

If you look just to the right of your steering wheel, on the dash, you will see a small rubber, black slotted, inlet. That little fan is part of the automatic climate control. It sucks in air from the inlet to determine the temperature in the cabin.

Well...

I thought that initially but dismissed it as to complex for the otherwise archaic climate control(s)...

Lo and behold, the climate controls in this car really ARE the most over and under engineered on the planet...

Thanks!

Yes, that is part of the ambient air sensor system. It sucks air in to "test" the climate in order to make any changes it thinks needs to be done.

That's kind of an intersting question though. It doesn't control dash fan speed...does it work with the automatic heater system? How about the AC system?

Maybe it's time to get out the wiring diagram...

As I understand it is a sensor to regulate the temperature of the cabin based on the setting of the dial between the seats but it will only affect the hot air and not the cool

AC is a seperate system

Interesting. Never really pad it much attention but I can't see where any would ever set the factory heat above the 2 setting (goes up to 10) unless they're trying to cook thanksgiving dinner in the passenger seat. It gets FREAKING HOT at 2!

All that work for 'auto' climate control. Man, the early age of silicone was...well, painful.
