How to tell what gear i'm in??

i changed all of the shifter bushings and i am in the process of putting things back together, and now i'm at the point that i have to connect the coupler back up. i left the car in neutral when i started but have moved things around since then, so how do i know what gear i'm in. the adjustment says to leave it in neutral, but i dont know if i'm still in neutral or a gear?

If the car is on the ground: can you move it by pushing? If the car in on stands: can you rotate the wheels freely? If so, you've got neutral.
