confused...?

I pulled out of a carpark in my '78 SC and it cut out. The engine turns over when i turn the key, and i can smell unburnt fuel from the exhaust. The coil, distributor cap, rotor arm, leads and plugs were changed over a month ago. When i put the ignition on i get the high pitched whistle from the engine compartment.

I dont know whether to connect a positive to the coil as i heard somewhere that the SC has 2 earths on the coil and no direct positive??

No spark at all though - any ideas please??

What is a carpark? And what is "2 earths on the coil".

What I heard you say was that your fuel pump is working, but you are not getting spark. Is that correct?

Carpark = parking lot.
earth = ground

well to start with what I would do is connect a spart plug directly to the coil, and ground the coil. Then crank the motor. Do you get anything? then work your way back from there.

Getting no spark at all? I was told that the coil has 2 "grounds" rather than a live and a ground so i am reluctant to connect a direct live to it? any ideas?

No spark.

the green cable that plugs into the distributor gets frayed right at the plug and the outer ground wrapping can contact the inner wire. so rule that out. the ignition unit on the left side of the engine can make the whining sound and have no spark, (if it's bosch. permatunes don't whine) so the sound only tells you that there is power to the unit. a spare test unit is helpful for a quick diagnosis. don't give power to the coil terminal or you risk damaging the ignition unit, if it's still good that is. pop the cap for the hell of it to be sure there's nothing obvious like a broken rotor.

The wire to the disributor is new, and the two connections inside are good on the distributor. The distributor is in good condition, as is the wiring. (It is a Bosch)

Brett,

No matter what ANYONE tells you ... DON'T CONNECT +12 Volts to the 'A' terminal of the coil!!! Also, ...

Please read the following Bosch CDI document in its' entirety! The only difference between your 6-pin CDI and the 3-pin unit described is the magnetic triggering used.
