welding 2 fenders together?

I have a 73 fender thats shot at the rear and mounting areas. Finding one for under 600 bucks has been a pain, as the midwest isnt a renowned Porsche parts area. I might as well go with fiberglass for that price. I wondering if its possible to weld the turn signal box on a 74 and up fender or are there other issues that would make this tough. Newer fenders are readily available it seems.

This is definately possible. Backdaters have used this method.

if i convert my 77 930 to a RSR look, i'll be welding the front t/s sections on. i saved them from a 69 912 i parted out. so it's certainly doable.

Didn't Milt (Zeke) do something similar? I think I recall him mentioning this recently.

It is very possible, and for my next backdate project, I will likely do that instead of waiting months to find useable steel fenders. Even the steel fenders I bought from California after giving up hope to go the Ultimate RUF CTR path had to be repaired.

I've got them sandblasted no and will finish the last of the welding this weekend.

The guys at 911 and Posrche World did the weld on method. You will find the article in the Ultimate Backdate Thread.

If you are interested in having this done, and you need a shop to do it, MotoMotions can do it for you. I have my tub stripped at the moment, so fitting fenders and early leadign edge prior to welding would be a snap.

Yes, I welded two fenders together, but at a much different place and for a much different reason. It certainly can be done.

The used fender I obtained had damage to the turn signal area. The old fender was perfect in that area so I cut out the bad on the new and welded in the good from the old. Not the best shots, but you get the idea.

Remember that the areas where you weld will lose their rust preventative coating, so when putting it all back together pay special attention to this and protect them. Do not want them rusting out a second time!

zeke- i knew i saw that on here just couldnt remember who did it. that section you cut out is where my fender is shot as well. the previous owner rivited sheet metal over bondo and then bondo'd again. the fender had a nice dome to it.

Like this abortion? I almost quit on the car when I found this.

It just got worse, I should have quit. But, it's all done and behind me now.

yep that looks very familiar, except mine is the 7-11 super big gulp variety. im guessing both previous owners must of been related.

These pics illustrate the need for a replacement panel for the rearmost edge of front fenders. Seems to me Stoddard or someone made these years ago, but I haven't seen 'em anywhere in a long time other than a recent post about someone in PA or thereabouts making a repair piece, but just the bottom 6in or so. Anyone know of a repair for the entire rear edge? Sounds like money to be made for replacement panel business.

Here is two fenders I recently spliced together for a 67 912. The vertical section was rusted on one and the front section was rusted on another. Make two into one.

Pictures can be found here.
http://www.912bbs.org/index.php?a=thread&p=82519

First, align and tack the two sections. There is about 1 inch overlap here.

Next, cut up to the first tack with the saw and but weld after the cut. The overlapping section of metal is peeled out from behind.

Finish welding the seam and grind out.

Finish out with less than 1/16" filler to smooth seam. Paint and move on.

Best of luck.

Jamie is da man. You can see my amateur bodywork but not Jamie's seam. If I hadn't stupidly been trying to catch an experienced driver in an ST replica with tires 3x as wide as mine, I wouldn't have gotten myself into this mess in the first place!

Thanks again Jamie!

I have a set of fenders from an early (69) norrow car that we are adding steel 9 inch flares to convert it to an RSR. I will snap some pics and post them here for everyone once they are done.
