914 to 911 conversion?

This may be a silly question but, here goes. My goal is to create a mid engine 911. Can a 914 be converted into a 911? I know the wheelbase is slighly different, but couldn't I use 911 fenders/quarters, decklid and bumbers, then modify the rear targa glass pillars?

As for the wheel base, I dunno....Any thoughts?

Would probably be less work to take a 911, cage the rear of the car, turn the engine/trans around, flip the tranny upside down, etc. That way all the suspension mounting and body panel location points are already referenced.

What is the motivation for this goal? Racing? I'm not sure you'd be able to enter it competetively in any classes unless you were prepared to spend a staggering amount of money. I haven't hung out at the track for about 5 years now so I am not sure if anyone has tried this recently

I thought of that....my goal is to have something different as well as a car that will handle like it is on rails and not always having to worry about rear engine handling/cornering problems

It will be different. I thought it has been done. I am sure others will come up with links and info. Porsche would have done it for you, if they wouldn't have wanted 4 "seats".

Personally, I think the 911 may handle different than a front or mid engine car, but it certainly isn't a "problem". I would invest my $ in a unique 911 that has the engine still in the same location. Bang for the buck will be better and resale, if a factor, will also be much better. We all don't prep our cars to resell them, but it happens.

Otto has some pics of a mid engine 911 on his site. Good luck going from a 914 body to a 911 if you try it!

Yes, there are a couple of mid engined 911 race cars, and just recently someone from Belgium or somewhere in Europe posted pics of someone converting a 911 to mid-engine.

There have been lots of body kits for 914s that make them more 911 like (the slant nose cabrio look was popular in the 80s). IMO, all these kits ruin the lines of a 914.

I wasn't thinking body kits, I was thinking actual 911 fenders, bumpers, quarters, etc. I think the windsheild and doors are the same as a 911. Just the rear end would be a challenge.

I'll have to keep researching.
Thanks for the input, if you think of anything else let me know.

Teh body panels of a 911 will not fit a 914. For one, the front fenders are part of the unibody structure. The doors are completely different in shape. If a mid-engine car with 911 looks is your choice, tube frame the rear and flip the drivetrain as Dave mentioned. YOu can use a 914 tranny and linkage.

Sounds like fun. Take lots of pics when you get the welder fired up!

Get both a 914 and a 911. That's the only way to go.
