What is being done?

I'll second beep's question, what are you getting done?

Since my engine project is nearing completion, I need to decide on my 930 box. It shifts well, but I'm planning to put a 8:39 R&P in. Since I've been so slow with everything else, I'm thinking about sending it out to have it done. Who's doing your's?

Patrick Motorsports is doing it for me with a late 930 box:

Complete rebuild and blueprint for high torque/hp
Machining for oil squirters aimed at top of gears and ring & pinion
Guard GT Torque Biasing Diff
Billet side cover
etc...

It looks like they put in sleeves for the bearings. The holes that the bearings press into tend to wear out, allowing the race to spin in the hole and potentially affecting the shaft alignment. Wevo does a similar repair but I believe they use an hourglass shaped steel piece that holds both bearings.

I think the WEVO unit is more for restoring a box that is way out of spec..

Hmm...not that I've heard of warped 930 housings but it sounds re-assuring. ;)

So you decided to go with the billet side cover in the end? Did Patrick mention the reason (besides selling a $500 part) that this was necessary?

Scroll down in this post Is this a smart upgrade during a transmission rebuild? for Weviod's comments:

I would not choose to use a billet side cover based on stiffness."

Yeah, that was what I tought as well. Forces on 930 side-plate are highest in 1:st gear. 930 1:st gear is very high, so it shouldn't stress it enough...and even if you happend to have mother-of-all-engines turning the wheels this force will be limited by tire-traction.

I know a guy doing lot's of drag-racing on his G50-equipped 3.6TT-powered 930 (engine is almost into 1000Nm range) and he never ever damaged side-plate. He broke heaps of halfshafts, yes....but no side cover.

I seriously doubt that you can generate enough launch force to damage OEM 930 plate, BB V8 or not. Especially not with it's stock high gearing. 935:s didn't have any bling-bling side covers either.

Ok, so I did not need the side cover - we will call it transmission jewelry... :D :D :D
