"My first Porsche"

...almost...
I was showing my daughter early pics of me and my family and ran across this one of me with my Dad's 356.
The car was a medium blue and we lived in Grand Rapids, MI, at the time. (1959-60). He must have just gotten it: it doesn't have plates on it yet.
I think it was a '56. He sold it to someone up toward Cedar Springs, MI, after we moved to NJ in 1966. I saw it a couple years later, after the new owner had painted it a pale yellow.

This is where it started for me.

There are other pictures in the album of our late 50's beetle. I loved riding in the little luggage area behind the rear seat, under the window, but the carpet was very scratchy.

That is an awesome picture. Reminds me of our neighbors 356 that he inherited from his father. He drives it every Sunday. I lust after that car.

That 356 is cool. My dad only had a 57 vw bus...36 hp and hauling around 8 kids and 2 adults. Max speed 60mph...downhill!
Amazing we survived.

Just think if you knew what you know today, you would have grabed the keys from your dad and the biggest pillow you could find. Then you would have jumped into and taken off, hiding it somewhere where he could never find it. Then you would still have it today!!!

You should see if you can track it down and buy it back!!!

I'm not sure I'd even kow where to begin. My dad might remember the guy he sold it to, but that was a looooong time ago.

Would be interesting, though.

98GTW, I'm near Grand Rapids. Let me know if you're interested in locating the 356. Shoot me an email or PM.

Great picture. It started similarly for me, with a 1963 Super 90 Cab.

Yeah, I remember that carpet. The same stuff was behind the fold down rear seat on my parent's 62 Karmann Ghia. I recall becoming acquainted with it during the trip from NJ to Detroit in 63.

I'm glad that the cars we were pictured with at an early age didn't necessarily determine our choice of vehicles in later life. My picture at about your age with a car was in front of my grandfather's 50 Cadillac. Then there was the one in front of the Studebaker....
