Calling all BAE kit guys! help me!

Fellow BAE’ers I need your help!

A Exhaust guy up here in Prescott is going to look at welding me up a adapter fro the later style HE to replace my Early style I got with the Turbo kit.

I need to know where the turbo should end up. It needs to be high enough to drain into the valve cover as you all know.

SO any #’s you can give me?
IM trying to get away with taking apart the whole car and leaving it at the exhaust shop.

“It needs to be X inches above the bottom of the valve cover”

Or “being the kind soul that I am, I crawled under my SC and have all the numbers you need to give to you exhaust guy”

I will even take a “you can figure it out by attaching all the boots and measuring back from there”

But its my Daily driver:( … so I am hoping that I can at least get some advice here.

Thanks for anything _nick

I'll try to take some measurements and make a sketch tonight.

Get a chance to pull out the tape measure? If not, its alright I can take it apart this weekend and see if I can figure it out. What’s the Min angle the drain can be again?

From the middle of the two lower bolts in the front that hold the cat (or bypass, or header) onto the crossover pipe, I measure 20 1/4" back to the beginning of the bend. It looks to be approximately a 45 degree bend, 9" long, then starts another bend upwards towards the turbo. that last bend is not a 90 degree bend, it looks like a 45 and then the turbo flange is welded onto the angle cut pipe.

Mine is mandrel bent but if you sourced the correct size pipe and elbows it would be a piece of cake.
Juat take a cat bypass pipe like the one in the picture, cut the flange off the outlet and lengthen it with straight pipe to the 20 1/4" dimension, then weld on a 45 that is still level but turns towards the engine, then another straight pipe of pipe, then a 90 degree bend upwards that is cut off short before it goes up very far.

So the pipe shouldent bend up untill the last 45?

how far from the timing cover?

how much higher then where the cover is taped?

how about how much the pipe should go up total so i can still gravity drain...???

The oil drain flange on the bottom of the turbo will end up about 1 1/2" above the center of the drilled hole that is layed out according to the BAE manual. That doesn't seem like much but it is what it is, and will work. I would assume that the amount that it bends upwards would be identical with the early and late manifold styles.
I don't have a way of laying it out any better than that without taking it all apart and drawing it with my faro arm and laptop.

You will need to try and keep that drain line running slightly down hill and as straight as possible.
Make sure the turbo housing is indexed so that the drain hole is no more than about 10 degrees from vertical.

thanks!

I still think you should sell me your early style adapter :)

iamchappy 02-08-2005 04:15 PM

WELL..... if I get the appropriate flange for the rayjay... it might just come to market at a reduced price!

iamchappy 02-08-2005 06:04 PM

I have an extra t4 flange and the exhaust flange welded onto a Flowmaster 3 in 3 out muffler, also my old 914 ss cross over pipe thats not needed anymore.

air-cool-me 02-08-2005 08:58 PM

i dont supose the t4 flange is the same as the rayjay...:(

iamchappy 02-08-2005 09:10 PM

Of course it is, Everything has come off my car that was from the original BAE kit other than a few intake pipes and the intake boots. The flange for the Rayjay is a stock T4 flange which are available everywhere. The 4 bolt exhaust flanges are also available.
Not like the K27's, I had to make my own exhaust flange.
I have a few drag bikers interested in the Turbos which may be gone to them soon.

iamchappy 02-08-2005 09:15 PM

Oh by the way Nick the chain covers are on the way.

air-cool-me 02-10-2005 08:43 PM

just got the covers...

WAIT on the turbos! check this out!... ther exhaust side is not looking so hot... might have to snag one of yours...:(

i guess i should have made the seller open it up...:(

you cant see it on my shiesty camera and dorm lighting... but the exhaust side looks very crusty...

i think it would clean up... but near the flange i can scrape off rust!.. the edge of the housing\outlet can be rounded off with the use of my car key...

just kinda scrapes off...

DAM.... idk about this ...
