Replaced Clutch and Many Other Things- Help with Oil Leak
Ok, I finally got the engine back into my 72 MFI 2.4T after:
Replacing the clutch, flywheel seal, rear pulley seal, thermostat gasket, sending unit gasket, oil cooler seals, installing rocker shaft seals, and many other things. I have a small oil leak that is leaving about 1 drop overnight. It is gathering directly below where the engine meets the transmission. It appears the the oil is not dripping through the drain hole in the bottom of the bell housing but it is actually running around the perimeter of the 2.0mm lip of the engine that seats in the transmission. I replaced the flywheel seal and it went in perfectly straight. I was thinking that oil could be leaking from somewhere up high on the engine and running around the outside of this lip somehow. I checked my thermostat gasket, oil sender, and everything else on the top of the engine and they are all dry. Is there anywhere else it could be coming from? I really hope it is not the flywheel seal but as I mentioned it went it straight and looked really flush with the case. Thoughts? I'm dreading the idea of pulling the engine again.... I don't have the time. Ian |

It's pretty easy to mess up on the flywheel seal install, a scratch or a nick. Sounds like that's what it probably is.
