Strange noise at oil tank area

Hi all,

I just bought a 2.2T from 1970 that runs beautifully. The only thing I don't mind is a strange noise at the oil tank aera, when engine is warm at iddle speed

When I am in the car, this noise is loud "clong clong" and not regular that let me think there is no relation with the crank rotation and all internal moving parts. I can have 3-4 "clong clong" in ten seconds and no more during 1 mn.

Outside the car, we locate the noise around the right side of the car, near the oil tank. But the noise is more clear like "clac clac".

But absolutely no noise when driving, only at iddle.

I noticed that at iddle speed, when the engine is warm, the level pointer is at the top, in red area. I suppose there is too much oil. May be any connection ?

I will try to suck 0.5 liter of oil to see if it is better...

any advice welcome of course !

Make sure the tank mounting bolts are snug (tight) they will be to the left and right of everything else. If loose you could get some pulsation as oil is being returned from the engine to the tank causing the tank to rock a little against the body.

It is the 6 lost dipsticks rattling in the bottom of the tank.

Actually the last post sounds likely. It would be loud enough that you could hear it. I can't imagine a way that the sending unit could be clunking loud enough to be heard over the engine.

Fram oil filters make noise. If you've got the right filter (Mahle), then nevermind.

The first I would do is to change the oil filter.
