87 911 Targa - TIRE QUESTION

My 87 Targa has some tires that are pretty narrow - I love the look of the late 80s 911s (especially turbos) that have real beefy tires on them.

Does anyone know how wide I can get them without having to do any additional work to make them fit? And any suggestions of good brands?

Thanks,
Andy

You can use 7x16 front with 205-55-16's and up to 9x16 rears with 245-45-16's without rubbing issues. That's what I use on my 89 with no problems. With some finesse, you can probably even go wider.

225/50/16 on 951 8" Fuchs (and a little fender rolling) 245/45/16 rears - easy fit

Jeremy, Is your's lowered? I lowered mine and tried 225's up front on 8 inch rims and they stuck out past the front fenders. They are not 951's however. Even with 205's on what were the rear 7 inch rims I had to roll the left front fender. BTW the polished spokes rally look great on your car.

A little above Euro height.

Roll the fenders - 951 8's is a must.

You can actually go really big if you get some big 17's with the right offset. I think there are people running 9's and 10's or even a tad bigger on Carrera bodied cars.

Also an aggressive amount of neg camber can help with running larger tires.

I went to 225 50 16 with 7's on the front and 8's with 245 45 16 rear.

I had to do a little work on the driver side fender and oil lines but it handles like a different car, and it doesn' look to shabby either.

9's on the back- the only way to fly. I still have my 6's up front while my 7's are getting refinished to match.

Getting very hard to find them in good shape, and it is not a cheap upgrade!

Oh sorry- no one is really answering your question.

All of this has been covered so a search will uncover much. Lots of guys on a budget run Kumho, Falken etc. I prefer good bang for the buck tires like BFG Gforce KDW (what I'm wearing now) or Bridgestone Pole Positions if you have some coin to spend. Can't really go wrong with Michelin.

Just depends on your driving and what you want to do with the car.

'84 with 205/55/16 and 245/45/16 on Yoko AVS ES-100's with 7and 9's. Euro height with rolled left front. I have owned these tires for a few months and I like them well so far, especially for the $$. You shoul be able to do the same with your '87.
