Cam timing, high lift/duration, rotate cam or rotate crankshaft?

I am confused on which and/or when the crank or cam is suppose to be moved or not

: pages 167-168. It says to hold camshaft steady, carefully remove pin...then says..."rotate the camshaft until the dial indicator shows that the valve has moved the amt. indicated..."

But at the end of the same paragraph (top of p. 168), it states...."Turn the CAMSHAFT until your dial indicator reads the value between these two numbers." but immediately following states..."With the 1970 S, you would turn the CRANKSHAFT."

Which am I suppose to be rotating and when? The camshaft itself?, and/or the crankshaft?

Also, AFTER the first initial removal of the pin, (dot facing downward), do I ever let go of the cam?

Thanks
