MB Quart model question
 

I am looking to replace my door speakers with a 5-1/4 MB Quart but wanted to see which model that other Pelican's have used & liked.

DKD-113 about $80
DKE-113 about $90
RKC-113 about $110

What are your preferences and which model would be best for my 88' cab which only has two speakers in the entire car?

Do the 6.5" instead, it's a better fit. I know the stats say 5.25" but a 6.5" is what is required.

Also, I reccomend going up a step up from the Discus....You'll be fine.

So the 6.5" will fit without modifying the factory door cut out?

Yep, in fact it's a better fit. Absolutely no mods required - except ditching the factory grille if that's what you're presently using.

One step above Discus pricewise is what I have, and you WILL need amplification to make 'em work properly - if you are using the head unit and that's it then I reccomend something lighter lke Pioneer Co -ax's in 6.5". Even a basic 50x2 RMS brand name amp underneath the driver's seat is fine. Mine are powered by a 150W RMS and it's strong enough to be heard down the street with the windows open. Great, natural sound since the Quarts are really good at low frequency response - given there are no subs in your car it's the next best thing.

Are the component sets worth the extra hassle of modifying my doors? Pretty much my interior is 100% factory and in really good condition. I found the DKE-116 for $99. I also located the RCE-216 component set for $152. But I can't find the RCE-116 at all in a non-component set, Is the difference between the single Dsicus 6.5" speakers and the component sets that drastic? We are trying to decide if we go for the components and modify the doors......I will be buying a Kicker amp to power is all.

I think on my RCE 216 that I just installed, the tweeter can be plugged into the cone of the speaker. That was an option. I chose to mouny separetley higher on the door.

They are fantastic sound. You can probably go on there website and review the instillation instructions.

I'm not as familiar with MB Quart as I used to be, when I had them installed about 5 years ago. But I do remember that when I purchased them, you couldn't touch MB Quart for the prices listed above.

Their prices must have really fallen. FWIW, I love MB Quart speakers.

The co-ax's will be easier to set up -

Remember that sound originates from a central point. Having a speaker set that has the tweeters mounted in a different location, with different distances to your ears than your mids will not be as accurate as a co-axial (with both drivers emenating sound from the same point)

Same rule applies when choosing rear speakers - never choose anthing that has the ability to out play the front in terms of volume.

Have to disagree on the coax better. Lower hertz sound (woofer) is not directional therefore mounting location is not as important. Higher hertz (tweeter) is directional therefore you want an unobstructed path to the soundstage (i.e. your Ears).. Therefore, having the tweeters mounted in a way that provides a better path to the soundstage is better, to a point. You don't want the tweeters separate from the woofer by more than 18 inches (some say 12), but a little separation can be good to get the tweeter sound unobstructed by your knee (where the woofer is mounted).

What about the depth of the 6.5's? Do you need to build out the trim ring or grille?

The quarts are a drop in fit, no spacers are required.

All the above is the correct info, if someone takes the time to set up seperates (paying attention to distance, and phasing) they are superior.

Drawback is a hacked door panel though.

Anytime. Gonna sound good- I've been a quart customer for 13+ years now. Those are the only drivers I use these days -

There must be more than one type of speaker installed in late 80's 911's. I attempted to install a MBQuart 6.5 inch speaker in my door in place of the Blaupunkt 5.25 that was factory installed and it did not fit at all. Since the Blau's were shot, cone suspension completely shredded, and paper cones at that I purchased a set of MBQuart Discus series (their low end) 113's which dropped right in, and using the included metal retaining ring was able to use the OEM fasteners and grills. Looks exactly like it did when it came from Porsche.

One strange thing, there are tweeter grills and mounts in place, but speakers were never installed under the grills. Nice for me, I'll install a crossover and tweeters in the factory location, but I didn't know Porsche did that.

I've got MB Quart 6.5's in the doors on my SC, no mods to the metal, or factory grilles, they just slipped in behind the door panels...

Do the speakers install behind the panel or on top of the panel? (For 6.5" speakers and tweeters)
