Looks great, congratulations!

I'm a little curious why your case doesn't have a sump plate and it's an SC? Thought this came around in the 3.2 engine.

Just curious.

BTW, nice job.

Very nice work.

I wish I could have stayed for the test ride, but the in-laws were visiting and if I ever hope to see my car again, I needed to get home to a appease mom-to-be. :)

Participating in the sucessful reinstall (and the 60 degree weather yeasterday) became the kick in the ass I needed to get my project back on track.

This particular car is a very late '83. They started using the new cases with the 3.0 cylenders before the Carerras came out.

Very nice work. Looks great too, my motor is 50% of the way there too.

I can't wait!!!!

Why did you replace your injectors?

Because they were there. Because I could.

It looks like you used dilavar studs instead of the 993 steel studs, is that correct? I went with the 993's.

Rick Lee 02-08-2005 07:41 AM

They are most certainly NOT Dilivar. Have to check my receipts, but I thought they were 993 epoxy studs.

The sump plate change happened in '83 so some SC's had the later style case.

The replacement studs are epoxy coated steel (stick nicely to magnet). The 993 studs are also listed as fully threaded DILAVAR.

ChrisBennet 02-08-2005 08:29 AM

Some 993 studs (993 101 172 02) are steel.

Rick and others, yes you can re-ring Alusils. I know you didn't re-ring, but still, there was a chance that your cylinders could smoke, particularly if you idled it at first. If it doesn't smoke now, then you got away with that.

I continue to believe that getting the cylinders really cleaned, etched almost, was perhaps the secret. I re-ringed my Alusils at about 180K miles. The were WELL within spec. The most wear we could find on any cylinder was .0015" !!! Ring lands were very tight, also well within spec. Ring gaps were at the outer edge of spec. So, we put them in John Walker's BFPW (large parts washer) which changed the appearance of their business surface. Bruce Anderson said not to be gentle with this engine. I drove it within two minutes of startup, accelerating and decelerating. Today, probably 100k later (odometer broke), still no smoke whatsoever. Thing runs like an ape with its hair on fire.

For more info, do a Search. There is a LONG thread on the engine rebuild forum. Re-ringing Alusils has been discussed here ad nauseum.
