smelly carbs.
I used the search engine to no avail...
My new engine has no oil leaks at all, which is great. But I have a faint fuel smell in the cabin. It's not coming from the front. Very likely the carbs. They are newly rebuilt with new gaskets. But the seem between the top and bottom half on both carbs, where the main gaskets go, is wet, and so is one of the pump diaphragm housings. In other words, fuel is getting through in places, causing the smell. So... Are there gaskets that are better than others? Any tricks to eliminate seeps/leaks? Problems with torque settings?

Not sure about different manufacturers or materials, but the "regular" materials do tend to shrink a bit with age and thus cause minor fuel weeping.
I removed the banjo bolts recently and didn't have any replacement fiber washers so I wiped a layer of Loctite 574 (famous case sealant) on both sides of the old washer. Let it set up. It works. It's supposed to be soluble in fuel and oil so any excess shouldn't cause any problems with clogging. FWIW, Sherwood |

Charlie-
I've got Zeniths with old gaskets (with no sealer) and have had them opened up MANY times. The one time I've seen leaking around them was when I put in a new fuel pump and hadn't set the fuel pressure down with a regulator. As soon as that was down to about 3.5 pounds- no more leaking. You may want to check your fuel pressure, regulator (if you have one), check valve in the fuel pump, etc. Just a thought...

Richard Parr suggested putting a thin film of oil on new gaskets before installing them to help with weeping.
