before/after trunk pics

This started out as a "pull the glass" to change the headliner and now has become much more. New black RS carpet, headliner, door panels, window seals, door seals, repaint under seals due to a shoddy color change paintjob by PO Etc. Etc.. Nothing is ever simple I guess.

Trunk before

Trunk after

Looks great!!! Did you do it yourself or have someone paint it. and is the beige color the original color of the car?

The butterscotch was the original color, now it is GP white. I bought the car cheap and thus far rebuilt the engine. The interior was brown and in awful shape so that was next in the to do list.

I thought hard about repainting the trunk, I allready did the engine compartment when I had the engine out. The paint quality on the exterior is good and I would never want the butterscotch color in the future and I intend to keep the car so screw it, I repainted the inards.

The car is rustfree and solid so I cant bring myself to a total teardown
and proper repaint. You cant even see this stuff when then trunk carpet is in, but I could not stop myself.

Looks good! Do you want to paint the gas tank? I bought some paint for that purpose, don't remember where I got it from, but it was from the most highly recommended place for a concours match.

They sent it with a handwritten note saying the color is something like 99.7 exact to the factory color, undetectable to the human eye!

It is some kind of special paint, too. Surflex, or something like that.

Shoot me an e-mail if you are interested. I have no use for it anymore.

Trunk looks great ! The after picture is kinda dark, but did you refinish the fuel tank ? If so, how did you do it ? I am on the same path as you. While I have it apart I might as well........

I think I will leave the tank alone, the main goal was to get rid of the evidence of the color change which looked so cobbed.

The fuel tank cleaned up with prep-sol pretty well. A couple of stains remain, I think a little more work and it would clean-up entirely.

Tim,

I'm contemplating this on a 914-6/GT project. How did you do it? Did you remove everything? The GT's had white engine and trunks. I was looking at POR-15 "Britecote"

Some may vomit when they hear this, I know I would have before I tried it in the engine bay, but I brushed it on!

I had a quart of PPG Delstar that I had bought to fix a scraped spot on the fender when I first got the car (which I obviously sprayed on and blended). Out of morbid curiousity, I mixed up a batch with less thinner than normal and tried brushing some on in my engine bay. It actually covered and then flowed out leaving a glossy brushmark free finish! (keep in mind that the engine bay and the and most of the trunk area have a rough and weld spattered original finish.

With a small detail brush and a 1 1/2" brush one can move things around and if careful, do an excellant job providing you clean every thing up good before you start. I swung my fuse panel and some wires out of the way and the trunk area took me 2 evenings to paint.

No vomit here... I've seen the way POR-15 flows out. The brush marks disappear. I would imagine it would be the same as long as there's not too much hardner and/or thinner in the Delstar.

Exactly what I was thinking. I may be able to go for that Signal Orange color change afterall (I hate Chrome Yellow).

Awesome! I never would have thought a good looking job like that could be done with a brush. I'm glad to know it's possible.

Here is an after pic of my engine bay (I can't find the before pic).

The underside of the lid, the hinges and the rear shelf where the faded stickers are, was painted by the PO. Everything else in there was Butterscotch. Believe it or not, you can't tell this was a brush job.

I wonder if brushing would work with a bc/cc? Im planning on painting my car silver. It was originally silver and a PO painted it black everywhere.

Actually a pretty nice idea / approach.....we may be "purists" but we're not crazy if there is a suitable, less labor intensive alternate that gives such nice results !!!

If you are painting METTALIC Silver, I do not think you can brush it. I have painted some airplanes in mettalic silver and it is a pain. After spraying on a couple of coats you end up with an uneven mettalic finish and you end up doing a mist coat as a final coat to get an even finish (single stage Imron). Problem is that if you are not careful and do not time it right, you end up with a dry finish where the mist did not flow out. With BC/CC one does not have to worry about the mist coat/ dry finish issues, but I would bet that you can't paint the mettalic base on without having a screwed-up mottled mess. I could be wrong though, try it out.

Tim -

WOW.

A definitely helpful idea with my repainting efforts - I will do it myself -

May I PLEASE purchase some paint directly from you?
(Also GP White - and trunk looks horrible, absolute crap paint)

Craig, I buy my PPG brand paint from a local automotive paint supply store. It would not be very efficient for me to buy and ship it to you but here is what my paint was.

PPG Delstar Acrylic Enamel, OEM:L908, PPG# DAR898 (Grandprix Weiss)

You need to buy at least a pint of this. Also you need the activator (PPG Delthane Ultra #DXR80) and thinner (PPG DTR602). Cost would be about
$40-$60 total. The called for mix is paint=8, thinner=6 and activator=1 part.

Dupont Centari is a similar single stage paint that may work as well if you can't find a PPG dealer in your area.

I only put about 2 parts thinner in it (to allow better brush on coverage).
Only mix small amounts as the pot life is about 7hrs at 70 degs. It will dry overnight and you may want to put on a second coat (but probably not if you are painting white over white).

PS, if your car has the original paint in there, make sure you clean it real good, you may find that you do not actually need to paint. Mine was awful looking before I cleaned it well.

Good luck!
