Boge Struts with Bilstein inserts
 

I am looking to upgrade to Bilstein inserts in my Boge struts on an '87 Carrera.

Can anyone answer this question?

Bilstein Heavy Duty or Sport Inserts for BOGE struts, external thread, you'll need to verify that your pre-exisitng BLACK Boge Struts are threaded on the outside of the strut housing vs the internally threaded version.

outside threads, but inside the box you get both nuts for either inside or outside threads

My Bilsteins for Boge only had the nuts for external threads, which my '86 has. You can jack one side of the car up and let the front wheel hang down. The nut is then almost at the bottom of the top strut cover. You should be able to see a couple of exposed threads. Make sense?

For a car with daily street use, AX and eventually mild track use, do I want Sport or HD in the front?

I would also ( first) check what you have...inside vs outside thread, and not depend on what a paper spec says you *should* have...

You're OK either way....my highly personal vote would be HD front Sport rear...but many here have claimed success both ways....

I saw you mention in a different thread that you were hoping to do this without redoing the alignment. Do some searches and you'll see that there could be an increase in ride height when you go from old Boge gas shocks to high-pressure Bilsteins.

THis is an improvement I'd like to make to my own car as well, but if a new alignment is necessary I would like to bundle it with a whole bunch of other things.

Good point Johan, I will see what I can find in the archives. I may just go for these and the turbo tie rods and alignment for now. Later I will do the whole deal and re-align.


Trying to stay within some sort of budget is getting harder :)
