Siezed Turbo Tie rods- help!

'87 carrera w/ cheap a$$ turbo tie rods (rubber is all deteriorated) are causing fits- I have new ones ready to install but cannot remove the old ones. Car is on jacks, and I'm underneath it trying to break them free from the steering rack. Have already used WD40 (no Kroil on hand) and bent a craftsment 16mm wrench.

Any ideas? Would love to get the new ones on tonight! Thanks-

If they were installed with Loctite Red (or any high strength thread locker), they will require heat to remove. I've broken a 14mm socket and wrench (Craftsman) trying to remove a nut that was secured with Loctite Red. A little heat from a torch melted the bond and the nut came off easily.

Wow, these should not have been Loctite'ed in the first place, it is not a fitting that ever comes loose(?)

Not what our host states in "101 Projects." Page 152, second paragraph down - "Before you screw the tie rod into the rack, make sure that you spread a few drops of Loctite on the threads."

I believe there is a lock nut at the screw-in end that needs to be removed. Once this is accomplished, you may be ok in getting the rod off. Good luck.

Take a sawzall and cut them off or split the nut with a nut splitter.

Are you thinking of the strut end? Did you read the question? How would one accomplish anything by cutting them off? It would be hell to remove the piece from the rack if it was a stub, don't you think?

AFA the jam nut goes, before you bend or break anymore wrenches, try a cold chisel on the end of the flats on the nut. The sharp blows will help, but they won't help the steering box any. So be judicious with the amount of hammering. By way of suggestion, I would turn the steering so that the minimum shaft extends from the housing and you can still get to the nut.

One source of heat that you may use with some safety is a heat gun rather than a flame. Every little bit helps.
