Ingition Upgrade Advise

Hey guys,

I recently posted my completed 74 - 911 resto project and I need some advise. The engine has the original distributor with points and condenser. I want to upgrade it to something electronic. Who has done it and what do you like best?

do you mean that you want to replace the points with a Pertronix unit?

I did that (with help from you and others), don't think I have it lined/set up exactly as described in the instructions. Not overwhelmed by it, needs some tweeking still I'm guessing.

One guy was very set on getting the magnet to line up with the sensor - so much so he pulled the whole distributor out. This led to resetting the timing and a few other related things.

It can become a large project, or a project done less than perfect very easily.

I recommend doing lots of thread searches and learning from other people's mistakes before venturing down this path.

I'm sure it's a fine product, just not idiot proof.

I know a bit about the Pertronix Unit and I think it is available for my old Marelli Distributor. What I am curious about... is this the best way to go? Other than the maintenance issues, is the Pertronix that much better from a performance standpoint than a properly set up points and condenser distributor or do I need to do more?

If you're set on the Pertronix and it fits inside the Marelli, go for it. However, parts are NLA for the Marelli so eventually you'll have to find a Bosch to replace it. So make sure the Pertronix fits both.

The other alternative is the optical system sold by Crane. It comes in various flavors from just the optical system (to be used with another manuf.'s ign. box) or with the various Crane boxes. MSD also sells the same equivalent pieces.
