Hot Rod style meets early 911

I am a big fan or the show Overhaulin'. You may have seen it.."Where the owner gets tricked and the ride gets tricked out." Anyway, if you haven't seen it may be hard to relate to what I am asking. I owned a 64 1/2 Mustang coupe in high school and college and all my old man has ever driven from 16-65 is Mustangs. Sold my car to move to CA. (both the sale and the move where big mistakes, whole other story). Always a huge fan of the Porsche. As I grew older liked the Porsche more and more till it built to a crescendo. I still notice a nice Mustang or a nice piece of American muscle but not so much so a fan these days or so that I would buy another car or read and study about them again as I presently do Porsche. However, this damn Chip Foose guy, who I feel is a genius, and this aforementioned show is really making me want to form a melding of a Hot Rod and a Porsche. My thoughts on this are along the lines of fully chromed Fuchs, two-toned paint (most likely following the 2nd curve from headlight to taillight to the ground then 2nd color from top of that curve over the rest of the car), deleted exhaust, shaved drip rails, shaved antenna, and if I took it real far shaved pull handles, etc.... Typical custom Hot Rod stuff here. First off it would have to be original b/c I have never seen anything like this done to a early pre-74 car or for that matter any Porsche. Any thoughts? Sound stupid? PS....Purists will hate the idea but then again following my many other statements posted on this site....Purist is just a nice way of saying Elitist and I have never once done anything to make any other stranger in life happy. Make my wife happy, family, etc...of course no way I would be married if I didn't thanks for reading my post and have a good one.

Foose does OK work, but I don't know that I'd call him a genius, actually all of his stuff looks like bolt-on or bolt-in "mods" with a curiously similar paint job. Actually I prefer Trepanier's work ("Rad Rides by Troy"), but even his stuff has a sameness to it. They both seem to have found a "formula" for doing retro-rods and they keep following it.

Good luck with your project.

I have only seen a few of Troy's projects compared to the many projects of Foose. Foose has certainly legitimized himself as a craftsman with at least the big 3 domestic manufactures and many of his designs, in subtle ways, have turned up in their cars.

You don't know much about Chip Foose other than what you have obviously seen on TV.

In fact, he is a genius, a grad of Art Center College of Design and hand picked by FoMoCo and others to redesign production cars as concepts for show, like the T-Bird he drives.

He used to work for Boyd Coddington, and I would submit, had a good deal to do with that guy's success. Glad he left.

AFA the 911 custom, there have been many, some not too bad. Most people don't know what they are doing and make things worse. I don't think you will get much appluase for chrome Fuchs.

Someone want to show him the yellow car from the New Year's run 2004?

I went to high school with Chip Foose. Even back then (20 years ago), he was drawaing cool stuff and did cool things to cars. Somewhere, I think I recall he had an influence on the Prowler.. I wish someone would do an "overhaul" on something without a friggen 'mericun V8 in it, though.......

Troy and Chip are both amazing, I think the reason Chip uses so many bolt-ons on that show is because they only have a week to do it...and it's not ghetto like the 'pimp my ride' work.
I think Chip used to work for Boyd, then left. Now chip builds his own Riddler winners and even works with Troy to design cars. If I had the $ I'd let Chip, Troy or Moal do a car w/o a doubt.

Or 20" chrome wheels. I guess they're part of his "genius" too? Just because the guy can draw doesn't mean everyone has to like or even respect his taste.

I spoke a few weeks ago with one of the guys that does some of the powder coating for the show and suggested he pimp the idea to do a porsche, there is a well known and fully equiped porsche shop right in the nieghborhood where much of this show is shot. {Einmalig}His reply was that the show gets 13,000 requests a month to do "my" car and they choose cars they believe the most viewers want to see and also where they can get the most parts for free. It seems no one in the Porsche business wants to give away parts. I know someone that works for O.P.G that supplies thousands of dollars of parts to the show for free, although they do get a bunch of advertizing.

first off Chip Foose did not invent or start the oversized rim war. Car companies like Lexus, and Bently did that. The were some of the first to start putting large than average rims on their top line sedans. Then people's admiration and desire for such cars led to large and large rims. I don't know if you have driven anything with say a 60+ series tire lately but they dont do much to insprie confidence in tight turns. The large rim wars helped perfect tight handling low profile tires.

The producer of Overhaulin' wants to keep it about muscle cars. At least that's how the conversation ended when I pitched him on the Porsche idea over a couple of beers a few weeks back.

I heard Chip and his father once restored a 356, this is way back before the fame and fortune.

I am thinking about being like everyone else in America and cooking up some kind of law suit for descrimination against that damn show. First of they only choose people in So Cal so that is one count of regional-ism secondly they only pick gear head cars so that is another count of flat-six-ism

Chip will be in Atlantic City for a car aution in a couple of week. I was going to ask him this very question....Can ya hot rod a 911? I think it's out there enough for him to consider.

BTW, his work on the SEMA Cadillacs was far from bolt on. He walked the audience through design conception/considerations, clay mock-up, molding and a final product that could be eventaully mass produced.

As opposed to the leaf springs and solid rear axle, which most of those cars have?

Nothing against appropriately low profile performance tires. Oversize "dubs" and 35 series tires have nothing to do with confidence in the turns.

But I've never lusted after a lowered Chevelle so I'm definitely not the target audience here.

I read Chip Foose's bio and it said that the first car he ever painted was a 356 at his dad's shop

And for you non-domestic fans, there is (unfortunately) an episode of Overhaulin' coming out where they will overhaul a Civic.

There are a couple of other shows that focus on the Sport Compact segment. "Tuner Transformation" and "Sports Car Revolution" are two on Speed TV. They tend to actually make the cars faster and handle and stop better so it's not really comparable, though.

RickM is correct for sure the Caddy project was anything but bolt on man that is what I was getting at with the fact that the big 3 domestics are on board with Chip. I read in a magazine that he has a standing offer form GMC to work on anything Caddy, Vette etc... but he keeps turning them down he knows tehy wont give him full artistic control.....I think it would be the best move GM ever made...Hell I might buy a Vette then

I said to my wife a while back "don't ever sign me up for this show." For as much fun as I think it is when they redo these cars, I'd be pissed if someone took my car and re-did it since it would never match what I would want to do. They'd never take it, strip down the interior, put in a cage, drop in a 3.6 etc. It would get "pimped" with a big old stereo and fat muscle car wheels.
