The crank needs to be supported and protected on all sides. Since you don't have a styro case that a crank would come in, I would try getting some "Great Stuff" from Home Depot; place the crang in a kitchen garbage bag so the foam will not get on the crank. Find a box that will allow crank at least 3" of air space on all sides. Put some styro blocks under the crank to allow it to sit up from the bottom and begin filling the voids with the foam. Go easy because this stuff GROWS!! Trim off the top to allow the box to close. I have done this and had no problems. The foam will be a little of a pain to dig out but it is better than having a shipper drop and damage it. Trust me, it will be dropped and abused.
Good luck
Ben

Good tip Ben.

I would take it further and use the Great-Stuff to make two halves separated by cardboard. Two bags...not easy, but it'll be easier to get the crank out of the foam.
