What Cities have 911's by Detroit?
I have been looking for 911's (78-83) within about a 400 mile range of Detroit, MI and am not having any luck for the last 8 months. What are the hot cities that you recommend to have them? I just saw a post for IL owners and thought I would ask. It seems all the ads are in FL or CA, taking into account it s winter I am not surprised but thought I would have seen some in the last 8 months.
Any thoughts? |

I am from the Toledo area and I have seen cars on Collector Car Trader web site in the Cleveland AnnArbor and Detroit suburb areas in the past. Good luck!

I would check the local Birmingham/ Bloomfield Hills papers, Ann Arbor might be a good resource. And I've heard that early cars are a dime a dozen around Centerville Ohio.....

Lambertsl, if you are thinking of spending 15-20k on a car, why limit the search area? Get a lot of pictures before hand, and fly to see it once you are close to a decision. Shipping is not too bad, I had my 67 shipped from PA to Tampa, about 1200 miles, for $600.00.

lambertsl,
hey, i'm from Detroit! grew up in Troy, MI and moved to SoCal a few years ago. I know what you are talking about....Detroit is just not a place to find basically any foreign car because of the heavy american car push....you have to be lucky and patient. I would say your best bet is either Chicago come springtime or to extend your search to FL and CA and other warm climates... plan on finding a real nice one. One of the great things about Pelican is that if you are seriously interested in a car in CA, you could find a kind Pelican to go check it out for you and make sure it is legit and worth flying out for before you drop a few hundred on plane tickets. I would say that inconvenience is well worth the larger assortment of non-rusted 911s to choose from. Hell, if you find one in CA, I could drive it back for you to MI and make a family visit out of it! haha....seriously though, shipping is not that bad. Good luck with your search and post any perspective cars on this forum for criticism and expert advice.cheers, -Jeff

It is curious to me that many border Americans tend to forget that vast land just across the river. I am proudly Canadian and working on US citizenship, however I digress. Check the Upper Canada website in Toronto as there are frequently US cars for sale that were imported into Canada for various reasons. (See the dealer sales section) If you find a US car there is NO (zip, nada) import duties for a car being re-imported to the USA and, best of all, you don't have to worry about having the right pollution verification etc, etc. Buy it and bring it back, period.

911's for sale in Michigan? Considering there are only about 2 dozen of them in the entire state, the odds of finding one for sale are not good .......
That said, I found the Gray Wolf for sale 2 blocks outside of downtown Flint!!!!!!!!

Not many Porsches near me (SE suburb of Detroit). I agree with the guys who suggested Ann Arbor, West Bloomfield, Birmingham and St Clair Shores. I live in pickup-truck land where every other vehicle has a ribbon magnet on the back along with a Red Wings sticker. Oh, Kentucky chrome (duct tape) is a very popular body repair material in my area...

Art, I occasionally go to BASF in Wyandotte for work, boy some of those roads are just awful due to potholes. I feel for ya! I sometimes am afraid to park my German cars in the parking lot. It is definitely not a place to see too many "foreign cars"!

2 dozen in the entire state? Are you kidding cegerer? I live in Nothern Oakland County and there are 3 of them in my sub alone! There are plenty of Porsche's in Michigan, there's a guy in the Bloomfield area that has a CGT. My friends neighbor has a GT2 and a GT3, the list goes on. At our local PCA chapters annual picnic there are at least 30 cars that show up, mostly 911's.
lambertsl: You can try Prestige Motors, they are located in Madison Heights on Stephenson Hwy. You can also try Auto Europe on Woodward Avenue in Birmingham. If you stop by one of the local dealers such as Fred Lavery (Birmingham) or Bill Cook (Farmington Hills) you can grab a copy of the local PCA clubs montly publication which features cars for sale. PM me and I'll help you find a car.

Tim,
Yeah, the roads are horrible, I call them the "Ho Chi Minh Trail", although the roads in Vietnam are probably better than ours in Wayne County, MI. That's why I don't lower my car, the roads are too bad here, I bottom-out enough as it is. We go through tires and suspension parts like you wouldn't believe.

NOH2O has a good point, there are many more Porsches in Oakland County than probably anywhere else in MI, except maybe Ann Arbor.

lambertsl,
There are about 2 regions of PCA in Michigan. Try contacting the locals through the PCA national organization. I went to a couple of PCA track events in MI and a several P-cars did show up. So there are a few of them up there. Jim S. Last edited by jmshepard; 02-11-2005 at 03:25 AM.. |

I have seen that there are some postings on a bulletin board at Steinel's in Twinsburg Ohio by Cleveland sometimes. They are usually their customers that are moving on to different cars. Most are slightly to severly modified. Try giving them a call at 330-425-8582. It might be hit or miss, but give it a try. Try Roadfly.com, rennlist, pca.org, ect.
the true thing to finding a descent car is patience patience and then when you have had it and you are ready to settle on the next one that comes along....be patient....it will be worth waiting for.....and while you are being patient....save some more money for the upgrades!!! Brian

Also, don't be afraid to just walk into a place that you think might sell porsches and ask if they know of anyone with one that might be willing to part with it. That is how I found mine. The guy didn't even have it advertised and had mentioned it to his friend 100 miles away that sold vipers and vettes that he was thinking of selling it and 1 week later...in I walk inquiring if they see any come through the area for sale ever. You would be suprised by the answers and progress you can make by just asking the questions.
