Although it may be 17mm allen....it does not speak to the thread size....I believe its a TAPERED 24mm....do a search, I think some of us talked about it at some length looking for "outy" vs. "inny" plugs.
The "outy's" are hard to find..... Wil

Yes, the plugs are M24 Taper ...
The best of the 'inny' plugs are the steel VW ones for air-cooled cars -- that also take 17 mm Allen drive bits. Sometimes you can find the NOS external 19 mm hex plugs on eBay.

Warren:
The ones I ordered from Porsche....thinking I was getting the "outy" by stating the application was for a mid 70's 911...turned out to be a steel "inny", nice gold cad plate and takes a 17mm allen ....answer: superceded part ! ( will always be delivered as an "inny"). Wil

Wil,
I guess somebody at the factory finally figured why & how all of the irate complaints needed to be addressed about the aluminum 'inny' plugs that tended to strip out!!!

I don't suppose anyone knows when the change happened? Mine is steel but I don't know if it came with the car in '81 or somebody swapped it out. I had to yard on it the first time I took it out, so I'm glad it was steel. I did have the proper tool, however. I guess some places to save weight are better than others

To be clear...maybe the same size drain plug and fill plug were interchanged on the parts order....anyhow, what I got was steel. Sorry if I confused someone, maybe the "official" side mount fill plug is still ( officially ) aluminum...
