Which Platinum Plugs for SC
I’d like to put Bosch platinum sparkplugs in my 78SC. I’ve seen recommendations of every number from WR5DP through to WR8DP. Does anyone know what the right plug is? Please include the source of your information. Thanks.

Why do you want to put platinum plugs in your car? Do a search and save a little money!
Cheers, Jeff

yea, I am in agreement with catca, everything I have read has led me to believe they are not in your cars best interest.

yeah, platinum isn't that great for NA porsches... or even turbos. We use Bosch super for NA, and silvers for turbos

My "two cents" worth, stay away from platinum (and other exotic) materials and stick with proven, reliable copper core plugs. Bosch, NGK...even AC Delco or Autolite. I can't think of one auto application I have personally experienced where I was better off with platinum over a standard copper plug.

I replaced copper Boschs with twin electrode platinum. No postive difference. Copper going back in next time.

I used split platinums for a long time. Left them in longer than I should have between changes. They came out looking perfect, excepting the normal deposits that form. The NGK coppers I put in perform the same as the platinums.

I started running platinums almost 20 years ago, long lasting and no performance problems.

Don't diss platinum for the cars that came with them from the factory. My wife's truck has platinum plugs. They are a 100k mile service item. And they work great. You want them in there that long, because you have to be a proctologist to change them. ![]() George |

I have no problem with platinim plugs. I just do not see a need for them in a 911 engine, thats all.

Well if the plugs foul it usually is not the plugs fault, provided it is the correct heat range. They just aren't required. Take it with a grain of salt though, I am the king of things that aren't required, like coil overs. 3.6 light weight body work etc..!!!!!
They are not bad products. I used to use them, but found no performance or lifespan gain, so I stopped. I can get hem pretty darn cheap here too. Don't get me wrong, if you use them and they work for you, you should keep useing them, infact it may be unwise to switch to something different.Cheers, Jeff

I don't want to sound like I'm name dropping but I once took a class with Bruce Anderson and this topic came up.
At the time he was talking about sc's and earlier cars and said NOT to use the platinum plugs. He felt they were overpriced, didn't perform as well as copper and didn't hold their gap as well as copper. To which I said "...well, what about my cool collar." |

Sadly, this post has been highjacked into a factless ramble about personnal preferences. To those that named a plug, thanks. To the others, sorry I asked!

I wouldn't say it's a factless ramble. This forum relates how this, that, or the other thing worked or didn't work for various individuals. In general you're hearing that platinums seemed to work okay but probably aren't necessary, as the coppers worked just fine too and are less expensive.
