Light Weight News Flash

Airbus has developed a fiberglass reinforced aluminum and will use it in their new plane. This composite is 30% lighter than Al.

- This is the first FG composite with a metal that I have seen.

Honeycomed aluminum has been around for years, not sure if this is what you are refering to. It was an aluminum honeycomb sandwiched beteween outer layers of fiberglass to form a strong lightweight laninate. Been used in the marine industry for at least 20 years that I know of. What are the details on the composite Scarebus came up with?

Texalium has been around for a while now. The shop that's making my cab hardtop mold uses it, pretty neat stuff.

Thom, according to that website, they make those products for airbus. The honeycomb one that they state aribus uses in the floor would be similar to the product that I mentioned.

Texalium is more of an aluminized fiberglass than a honeycomb; you lay it up, bag it, and autoclave it like carbon fiber.

No, this is supposed to be a flat sheet material, and newly developed. You never know with derivative source tho....

Hmm, got my interest then. Resin and acetone ran through my veins for a while and I think they are in the family DNA. I would like to more.

The material used for the new Airbus A380 is called "Glare", a
laminate with alternating layers of
sheet aluminum and glass-fiber reinforced
adhesive. Glare is 10% less dense than
aluminum and is superior regarding fatigue and crack propagation.
