painting targa bar

Found a lot of good info using search on prep and painting with satin black. I am going to do it with the bar on, and several have done this with success. This is probably a crazy question, but I got the idea from a recent poster who brush painted his trunk area and it looked great, and he said there were virtually no brush marks. Do you think this would work on the targa bar? If it would, there would then be no overspray issues and therefore little taping to do and it might be easier to get a uniform coat.

I don't think that you should try it. I thought it was a great idea in the trunk and engine, but not on the targa bar. You will get too much reflection from the sun and it will pick up and the smallest brush strokes. That isn't noticeable in an enclosed area, but that bar is very visible. Unfortunately, you will need to mask and spray. Just take your time, it will look great.

This is good advice. The secret to good painting, whether it be rattle can or spray gun, is prep. Take your time, prep it well, mask carefully, and you'll have a great job. If you're concerned about overspary, mask the nearby areas with painter's paper (sold at Home Depot), and then mask the rest of the car with 9' wide plastic sheet (also available at Home Depot).

This isn't a tough job, and if you take your time you'll be VERY happy with the results.

Like anything worth painting, 90% of the hard work is good prep. I think the only place where brush painting cars is still acceptable is West Va.
