Lubing the engine lid release cable
What kind of grease/lube should I use to lube my engine lid release cable? The handle end of the cable is a bit rusty and not too smooth right now.
Thanks in advance.

I would try any light oil from both ends of the cable. Move the cable in and out several times for good penetration. Do the trunk-lid cable as well.

I use a motorcycle "cable care kit" that allows to push the lubricant through the full length of the cable. Only ca. $15 and will last forever.

Guenter - can you tell us more about how it works?
Post a pic of what it looks like? Sounds like something to add to my long-term maintenance thread...

It's a fixture that clamps onto the end of the cable sheath. The cable itself exits the fixture also, but the fixture makes a seal. The fixture has a hole into which you insert one of those little red straws taht come taped to aerosol cans. So when you squirt the juice in, it has no place to go but down between the cable and the sheath. Any motorcycle guy can show you his. Fixture, that is.

They have something similar for bicycles available at bike shops and bike mailorder catalogs. I never thought of using one for this though. Great idea!!

I found the "cable care kit" on the net and this sounds like the ticket. Think I'll try it. Thanks for the great ideas.

You attach the cable luber adaptor to one side of the cable. Then you pressurize the lubricant until it flows out of the other end of the cable.
