Won't start during time window!
This is becoming more frequent now. Basically I will drive for about 45 min (from work to the gym) and park. After my workout (approx 1 hour) I attempt to start the car but it won't start! It turns over no problem but the enigine doesn't start up until about the 4th or 5th try and then it starts a little slowly but then runs fine.
This never happens when the car is parker for longer than an hour or so. Any ideas?? Thanks, Nik |
the standard fuel pressure leakdown problem that's common with CIS cars. a check valve installed on the outlet of the fuel pump usually fixes it. the accumulator can also be defective, but less often than the check valve. there is a check valve inside the fuel pump already, and when it fails, you just add another to the snout of the pump. a fuel pressure gauge specific to the CIS system would tell you if the pressure drops off. the system is supposed to hold 1.6 bar for 20 minutes. in the mean time, you can remove the air filter and lift the sensor plate arm for 2 seconds, with the key on, to make it start faster.

JW, where does the check valve for the fuel distributor hook up?

No sub, are you having the same issue?

different valve designs for each location. the fuel distributor check valve (not the one inside that controls system pressure) replaces a fitting on the front of the unit that the fuel inlet line attaches to. bosch # 1 587 010 004. it does the same thing as the one that is commonly used on the pump, but it's easier to do. follow the line from the filter to determine inlet and outlet lines.

Hi john, not sure if you're still getting this but I had the same problem tonight except it didn't sound right once it did start and had very little power. Wasn't firing all cylinders I think. Kinda sounded like an old VW.

I've had the same issue with my wifes '71 Targa ('73 CIS 2.4) for the last few months (since we bought it). Once warm, no problem starting the car ater 10 minutes. No problem after an hour. No way it will start in between - car turns over, but nothing will make it start. Sensor plate trick hasn't worked at all on the car (first thing I tried) - just had to wait it out on each occasion. I'm assuming accumulator??
I'll probably add the non-return / check valve too! Ash |
Older thread here. I already had the fuel pump check valve and installed it some time ago. Problem solved.
