negative, standard on Turbo, but smaller Carrera tail was always an option.

It seems he is looking at a car to buy (check his other posts) he is looking a a whote Targa with a tail.
You best bet to find out if it was original is 1) check the option codes in the front trunk. The next 2 apply to my car (1987) not sure about older cars. 2) The 3rd brake light in a car with a tail standard in moutend up by the roof, where a non tail car has the 3rd brale light down by the deck area where the speaker grills are. 3) Car that had a factory tail have 2 shocks top hold open the engine lid, non tail cars have only one shock.

I was looking for the option codes and didn't see the sport group or spoiler one listed anywhere? I did for 84 & 85.

1987 models with a factory installed tail had an exterior mounted light that was extended up/out form the body ('goose neck') for visibility purposes. That would mean a tail (carrera or turbo) mounted on 1987 coupes/targas with an interior third brake light (at the bottom of the window) was NOT factory installed. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong so I can be sure to keep this bit of trivia straight.

I'm not sure about that. My '87 Coupe which came with factory tail had the 3rd brake light high up on the interior side of the rear window. My '87 Targa, also with factory tail, had the "gooseneck" 3rd brake light on the exterior, mounted on the lid just above the tail. Perhaps different for Coupes, Cabs and Targas?

I think the look of the either the duck or whale really sets the car off. so since this one doesn't have, are there any negatives to adding it? Besides it won't be original equipment.

1 It reduces the lift at the rear axle. 2 It provides more air for the engine which results in a cooler engine If you are going to add a tail which lots of people do, to keep #1 above balanced for the whole car you'll need to add a front chin spoiler. The spoilers on 911's should always be added in pairs to keep the balance of the car at speed. If you want a tail, add away!

Is it possible that early and late production numbered cars in one production year have characteristics similar to the older/newer model? Later models having some changes that will be incorporated into the next year's car.
