IC size Vs. Turbo size.......
Hey all,
I get the feeling I am opening a huge subject here. I know this discussion has been had before. I will get straight to the point here. I am going from CIS to EFI this next winter. Will I be ok running a full bay IC with a K27/7200 turbo. I am thinking it may be a little more laggy for now but when I go to a the HF version it should be ok yes? Without getting too technical here is there a quick answer? Thanks for any advise. Im thinking if its being built should I go for the biggin? Bigger is cooler (temp) right? Thanks for the help here.................................C |
Bigger IC usually cools better, but it also means bigger volume between turbo and engine -> slightly more turbo lag.
It's usually best to build as big IC as you can fit physically. |
I built a full bay intercooler to put on my 75 930 motor. Originally it had no intercooler. After the install I noticed no increase in lag. None. I think you will be fine. The increase in intake volume is very small compared to how much air the turbo is putting out. Go for as big of an intercooler as you can stuff in there.

I have asked this question in various boards before as well but never got any useful response :(
I'm in similar boat - I'm still using CIS (and plans to continue with that :)) but have the HF, GHL headers & am going with straight thru pipe this summer :D The car has a Garretson on it right now but since my A/C is already gone, I'm tempted to go with a full bay. But... how do I determine if it will help; or not? I'm installing IAT sensors now so hopefully will be able to get some data by mid summer. Aside from $$$, my concern is whether a bigger intercooler will just add weight & add more pressure loss if my existing one is already "good enough" (but what is enough though?)? Thoughts & comments? |
Sweet. Not only nice to get the answers, but everyone told me what I wanted to hear. (lol) I can have the HUGE one built.
Thanks for the help guys.........................C |
I would contact the guys at Turbonetics. They are one of the premier custom turbo builders and they mfg. intercoolers under the Spearco name. They also sell the cores for custom intercoolers.

The size of your intercooler also should depend on the use of the car.
A track car requires a large intercooler while a street car does not. You are never on boost for more than a few seconds at a time on the street. My 1/2 bay intercooler NEVER heats up. It always feels cool to the touch. Even after heat soaking while parked it will quickly cool off once the car is on and moving. |
