1st gear syncros, when to rebuild

I cannot get my car into 1st until I stop dead. This isnt a big problem, but at times it does cause problems. Can you just replace the 1st gear syncro, or is this time for a complete overhaul. 86 911, 81,000 miles. I plan to change the than's oil soon. And how big a job, time and cost, would it be to have my 1st gear again. Thanks

My car has 118,000 miles on it. It has been doing exactly as yours since I purchased it at 64,900 miles. I wouldnt worry about it unless you are really bother by it and need to replace it.

Be sure to replace the clutch cable, adjust the clutch properly, put a new horseshoe helper on it... put in new shifter bushings and a fresh jug of Swepco 201 in the transmission...and the car will likely shift exactly the same 50 K miles from now.

i know in the 901? (early) trannys first gear is outside the case (or is it reverse?) and is pretty straitforward to repair (from what i've read anyway), the 915's need torn down for this.
my carrera does the same thing as yours also, put in new bushings etc, the biggest thing that seemed to help a little was the clutch adjustment, but still doesn't like to engage when moving.
the swepco made things feel a bit smother and i have a little more tranny whine (also using solid rear mounts).
i just adjusted my driving style too it, when do you really need first gear other than starting from a standstill.......you've gotta love torque

When the time comes, you can most likely do it yourself. Read up on it here.
