What's this plug??

Can any of you guys tell me what this electrical plug is on the passenger side of my (1970) 901 transmission? It's just forward of the axle mount.

The connectors inside of it are junk ! I pulled it out (completely on accident) by barely hitting the wire, then, I had to use needle nose pliers to put the two metal "pins" under the cap back in the connector plugs.

Can I buy a replacement plug?

(sorry the photo is slightly out of focus)

Yup! Have a catch basin ready when you remove it for replacement. You're going to lose some gear oil. Maybe this is a good time for a gear oil change as well? Tip number one is to be sure the fill plug is removable BEFORE you remove the drain plug. For rule number two? See rule number one. Actually, car sitting level on jackstands, gearbox oil changes are pretty straight forward.

I'm actually doing an engine drop. (losing my virginity)

I'm supposed to disconnect the backup light switch if I'm not mistaken. OK, so I pulled it out, is that it?

The wire "dissappears" up above the engine, and LOOKS like it stays with the car. Is that what happens? -or do I have to disconnect the wire somewhere else so there is no hang up when I drop...

I wasn't planning to do a gear oil change. (DAMIT) Now yet another possible project added on to the monsterous list of what this bushing change has become...

Started off with the intent of a few suspension/sway bar bushings and brake pads...

Has become: A-arm bushings, banana arm bushings (hence the motor drop due to bolts), spring plate bushings, sway bar bushings, brakes, rotors, motor mounts (tranny mounts eventually), half shafts (CVs) rebuilt and painted, valve adjust/tune up, oil change, and NOW possible a gear oil change !!! Oh yeah, and I may replace those pins on the backup light switch...

GOD I LOVE THIS CAR !!!!!!

Hi Brian!

Thanks for the reminder ! Wow, this is kind of like one of those movies (Cat's Eye) where there's ALWAYS somebody watching !!!

My S.F. is well in place, but I know it takes all of us looking out for the good of each other ! I really appreciate it !

And in reality, this (multi-) project is keeping me in the garage cleaning small parts with my dremel and steel brush rather than running around wasting money on fast food, movies and other time-fillers...

Not to hijack the thread, but you raise an issue I've been thinking about... How often SHOULD one change the tranny oil? IIRC, Bentley says some mileage that's much, much higher than I'd have guessed.

Always one for a good hijacking....

Good question, I haven't heard a good mileage or time frame either....

The back up light switch is connected to the engine, it does not need to be disconnected before the engine and tranny are removed, however if you are removing just then engine you will need to disconnect it.

there is no reason to change the gear more than 1x/year or 20k miles - the current thread with the Honda "expert" quote is not well supported.

For the later 911s, PAG spec'd a long chg interval - 60K?

Search for Sherwood's post for the earlier cars.

I do mine every 2 years along with the brake fluid.

Note that both time no matter what mileage and mileage itself can be involved. i.e. if the car sits and gets driven only 1,000 miles/year it is still a good idea to change the CV joint grease, gear oil, etc. and imperative to do so for brake fluid (it absorbs water vapor). You can use the shelf date for oils and greases as a guide to low mileage cars.

For further discussion on this, let's all post on the current time & lube thread. Maybe Mike/Lubemaster & Sherwood will post there also.
