Angry Case Thru Bolts

I brought my motor to get some oil leaks checked out,for shure I thought they were from the camshaft o rings but he tells me it is from one of the case thru bolts

My motor has 53k with great leak down numbers and compression

He wants to split the case

How Do You Know if one of your case thru bolts is leaking?

and can you replace it with out splitting the case

I will take pics tomarrow when I go see what is going on

You don't necessarily need to split the case (big $$). If you're lucky, the leak is on the nut side of the bolt. Get under the car and look up at the case through bolts (you know where they are, right?). Try to locate the one(s) that are leaking. You can try and remove the nut to look under the washer. Chances are the seal is crushed/smeared and that is where it is leaking from. If you can remove the nut and the washer, you need to clean out the area and install new seals. Get them from Pelican (viton green ones) and replace. Should do the trick. You could also use some heat resistant black silicone around the seal.

If the leak is from the bolt end (i.e. you cannot remove the nut) then you might just have to live with it instead of splitting the case.

Try post this on the re-build site for other ideas. I'm busy doing this repair myself.
