Porsche Crest Turbo Tie Rods

Well, here in Michigan we had one day with no crappy weather last Sat.
I found the "lost" ball joint lock plate under one of my wheels.
I got the alignment close and took it our for a little spin.
NICE!!!
The steering is super tight and responsive. Feels like a new car.
Now, once the weather is nice again, I 'll get it aligned correctly.
IMO, this is an upgrade everyone shold do.
I don't have any pics 'cause we haven't replaced our home computer, yet.
Just thought I would share some good news with you fellow snowbound Pcar folks.
Wayne

(It snowed just about 10 inches yesterday.)

Wayne--

Any particular complications? From what I've read, it's a straight-forward procedure, yes? (Have yet to do mine...)

Hey Steve,
Yeah, it was pretty easy. It was frustrating at times but using the posts here and my workshop manuals, I was able to do it myself. The tips from other Porsche guys will come in very handy.
The most difficult part for me was getting the pass. side old tie rod out of the steering rack. I could not use the old rod as leverage.
I did the job over a weekend, working one side at a time. I replaced my ball joints while I was in there, as well. I found a shop not far from home to do the alignment. They still have the old pits.

Oh yeah. If you are going to reuse the ball joint lock plate, don't forget where you put it 'cause you can't get one locally here anyway.
Ask me how I know......

The turbo tie rod update was one of the best upgrades I made on the car. I could really tell the difference. As soon as the weather breaks, lets get a group together for a ride!

Toolman.
I plan on doing more runs this year with local clubs. I have found some fantastic roads up in my neck of the woods. I "test" them with my company car first!
BTW-I just talked to the shop that is going to do the alignment.
$45.00 complete. He said they will set it up to my specs and he has done 911's before. I already got the ok to watch and help as needed.

Night and day difference when I put the turbo tie rods on my 79 SC.

I will be putting them on my 83 very soon. I hate that wobble feeling in the wheel when cornering.

BTW, does anyone know if/when turbo tie rods were standard equipment on 911's???

This is an upgrade I am going to do this spring. I have noticed a few different "brands" of turbo tie rod kits. Is one better than the other?

there are cheap copies. Pelican or the dealer will have the ones that don't kill you.

Thanks Wayne, let me know what is going on, I would like to tag along.

bradr, the difference is more precision in the steering. You would think it couldn't get any better, but the stock tie rods have a rubber bushing that has a lot of "give" in it. You will notice a difference.

webini, get the Pelican kit, top quality and good price!

Oh Haha - where are you getting the alignment done? I'm near Flint and looking to get one in the spring. Got the TT kit - just need to install it.

I am new to this form. Is the turbo tie rod something that I can do? I have changed the spark plugs and adjusted the valves. I am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but....
thanks

rip78---Condon's on davison rd. near Delphi East is where she is going.
A fellow that works for me has taken his cars there since 1972. they are not a Porsche shop but are car guys so they appreciate them.

crodog- Where are you at? I would be willing to help if you aren't too far away. I am north of Flint a bit. If you have adjusted your valves, tie rods shold be pretty simple for you.

crodog-not exactly in the neighborhood, huh?
Do a search here and you will find tips but also Pcar guys from your area that might be willing to help out if you needed it.
Of course, it's only 3 hours away from me. Could be a road trip!
