Engine is Out of Car: HELP- I Have a case of "while you're in there"- should I do..
I have the engine out of the car and I'm almost at the end of a bunch of work.
I'm thinking about replacing the rear shocks because they just look so tempting and easy to do with all of that room back there. I was thinking of doing fronts/rears/ etc next year but it seems very tempting to get the rears done now.... A few questions: 1) The car is a 72 T Targa 2.4 MFI and it has KYB's in the rear that are 18 years old but only have about 20K on them. Do they wear out because of time, mileage or combo? I realize these are not great shocks to begin with.... 2) I was planning on replacing the rears with Bilstein's. How much will I notice a difference? Thanks. Ian |
I would put the Bilsteins on even if the KYB's were brand new... not hard to do with engine in on your car.
When was all the suspension rubber renewed (or replaced with Eleph. Racing parts)? That is a lot easier now. Now is the time to detail the engine compartment, change the bolts around on the rear bana arm mounts so they are easy to remove with the engine in (and replace any suspension pieces that need it back there). There are numerous threads so use the search button and repost with any specific inquiries. The threads range from how to do it to what to do & when, to the philosophical... You need to get an idea of where you want to go with the car in the next 5 years... concours? racing? hot rod cruiser? |
The Rear Bushings Look Like a PITA
So I think I'm going to leave them for now....
The car is never on the track. |
