Well after much anticipation and a PPI I finally got my 79' 911SC. I have to say that it is a blast to drive. I have to find and fix the crack in the airbox (POV installed) because it is sometimes causing a miss at lower RPM's. I hope that is the problem. I plan on replacing some hoses behind the box as well. Otherwise the car is great and I am happy on the price I paid for it. It was a hectic day trying to get to the car to pick it up. Traffic was bad since it was friday. I made it home, did the obligatory rides and finally I was able to go out and relax with a nice steak dinner with my GF about 9:00pm. I get a phone call on the way to dinner from work and then things went down hill. Basically due to complications and "micro missmanagement" issues, by saturday evening I decided for my own good to turn in my resignation effective immediately for my own personal safety. Things got nasty between me and another co-manager who stole, drank on the job, and abused drugs. Corporate drug their feet for four months on this issue. I was threatened, coporate didn't care....until I resigned, but I refused to keep the job. Anyways, I realize this is probably bordering off topic, but that put a big damper on the whole weekend when it should have been happy since I got my 911. She probably thinks she's come into a unstable living environment

Sorry about the bad news bud, a nice little drive in the 911 should clear the head for a bit.

Good luck on the job search, Hoff944. Best thing is to jump right in and find something new.
Off topic as well, but don't bother going into any details of incident with prospective new employers.. the best motto is always> I have no problems I create no problems I can solve all your problems In a job interview anyway. Donb't worry about the Porsche, it'll wait on you, I.m sure....;-)

but getting back on topic.....does the miss at lower RPM's (2000-2500) sound like it could be part of the crack in the airbox? I figure as the suction increases is seals the crack or leak?

I've lost 2 jobs during my career, both times they were replaced by something better. Don't let it spoil your fun.
I have the same car you do, you won't be able to tune the car untill you fix the airbox, I'm suprised its running actually. Why do you think the airbox has a crack in it? Have you found the crack? If so, you should repair it and then tune her up. A cracked airbox creats a massive vacuum leak. Is it possible you just have a regular, garden variety vacuum leak? Do a few searches under vacuum leak and airboxes to learn a little more but you just purchased one of the strongest, most relaiable 911s ever made. Let us know what happens and for gods sake, post some pictures man! |

I don't know squat about the CIS system, except that if the airbox is cracked, broken, blown or whatever, it will not run correctly. So, that's part of the problem to be sure...
You'll need to fix that before you can tell what else is going on back there.

Under European law you would have a chance of bringing a case for constructive dismissal with undertones of mobbing. Might be worth checking the details in the US.

Good luck friend, things will get better soon and you'll enjoy (hopefully) the car and work. My job sucks recently, but I hope to outlast this poor management phase (have 20 years invested), they soon should just go-away.
You'll do better soon, I know it. Take the right job, then enjoy again. Jobs are there, seems companies are trying harder to hire the right people (except management in our plant). Good luck ![]() |

If your company did not do anything about an unsafe work environment, then you might have a case...the lawyers here might know better, but if you felt you you were put in a situation where you did not feel safe and had to quite...I would think your rights may have been violated.
Congrats on the car...there are always better jobs out there I say! |

hoff944,
cheers to the 79 911....i am especially partial! Let me tell you first hand, that having a 79SC has helped me through some bad crap in the past months. If i were my own therapist my perscription would have said, "go take two canyon road runs with your foot on the floor and call me in the morning" ![]() seriously, I had a major concert to prepare for, a nasty breakup with a longtime gf, and I moved into a new place right before going back to the midwest for christmas. i would not have wished this hell on anyone....it was that bad. good luck with your job search and i would second the fix of the airbox and the install of a pop-off valve if it doesn't have one. oh yeah...one last thing, POST PICS!!!!!! (or you will be banned) ![]()

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. I made some headway today by getting some resumes out on 3 jobs.
I ordered my valve adjustment tool, some extra feelers, gaskets, oil filter, and drain plug seals from Pelican and I should have them in about 2 days. I'm due for an oil change and valve adjustment. I figured I would try to sync it up to every other oil change is a valve adjustment. This will be my first adjustment on a 911. I've researched the threads and got the tech article. I think I'm ready. I'm planning on removing my A/C and beltless smog pump to lighten her up a bit and get some more access. I'm working on detailing so I'll get some pics later this week maybe. As for the miss at low RPM's, I'm thinking that when I increase RPMs that the leak is sucked shut causing it to run better @ higher RPMs (3K and above). My wrench that did the PPI said that he heard it sucking. He couldn't show me the crack in the box. He thought it might be some of the hoses behind the airbox. I had a VW Golf once with CIS and it had a cracked boot that would be sucked shut as the RPM's increased causing it to run better @ higher RPMs. I'm going to give it a look tommorrow when I get back from job hunting.

Well I got to know the passenger side of my engine compartment pretty well yesterday when I removed my A/C comp. I also removed my condensor too. Since I'll have the car jacked up, I'm going to take out the other lines (And whatever else that needs to be removed while jacked up) monday when I do my oil change and valve adjustment. If anyone wants my A/C stuff, they can have it for postage. It is the stock York. I'll never put it back on and don't anticipate on selling the car. Its a targa too so hey. I also think I might have found the source of my miss. The #5 spark plug wire is freyed. I'm going to order those up from Pelican soon. I inspected the airbox a little further and still can't find a crack. Maybe my POV is not sealing properly. I'm also going to remove my air pump/smog pump since I passed emissions with flying colors without it. Does the Bently manuel cover removal or should I just go ahead and tackle it without the manuel? I know I have to get some kind of plugs to plug the holes left behind in the exhaust. They are from the 914 rear brakes I do believe. I'll researh that again. I never found a definitive smog pump removal thread. I'm enjoying tinkering around with this car. Things seem more accessible than on my 944. At least that is what I'm saying right now.
