Passenger window disappeared
 

I need some help with the passenger window on a 86 carerra. Today while out driving, my passenger tried to roll down the passenger window (power windows). The window did not respond to the switch (surprising since this switch was replaced about 1 year ago). So I tried the passenger switch on the driver door, and of course no response either. I reached over to check the passenger switch and found that the switch had broken at the rocker. I pushed it back in place.

I tried the driver side switch once more and heard the motor move, but still the window did not move, so that was the end of the story or so I thought. Just a broken switch.

When the passenger door was opened, the window dropped out of site. I mean this thing just free fell right inside the door. The window just disappeared. Scared the crap out of me.

When I try the window switch on the driver door, you can here the motor engage, but nothing happens with the window.

I have not yet taken the door panel off, but any ideas of what happened. Lastly, when I closed the passenger door, I did not hear anything rattle.

Help please.

i hate it when that happens. the glass came out of the horizontal channel it used to sit in.

How does one fit it? What holds the window in the channel.

Sounds like you have two different problems, but both are related to glass binding. It probably went up crooked and froze in the up position. It is now detached from the window regulator. If it didn't break, you should be able to just reattach it with quick set urethane (same stuff that bonds windshields in most cars).

Lube your glass run channels with some silicone spray and lube your window regulators slides and pivot points with teflon grease.

I just did lots of reading on this topic. Seems like marine goop will work just as good as the urethane. I will begin to pull the door panel tonight to start work. I plan to replace the window felt as well.

How do you align the channel to the window? Is the channel width the same as the window width?

For me this was a major PITA.
Trial & error and a lot of scratched hands later.......it works ok.
Hated that job!

The same thing happened to me with my 83sc. Time to pull the panels, replace all felt and the rubberstripping that holds the window into the channel.Pull the trim pieces that run horizontally across the door to make it easier to get the window around the regulator since it sounds like it dropped behind it like mine did. Replace all switches if you have the $$ and use 3M spray adhesive and plastic dropcloth to replace the vapor barrier. You might also want to replace the plastic door opener handles with metal ones while you've got everything apart. Oh yeah, lube the regulators while you're in there. Just my 2 cents. Craig
