Angry cotter pin thru the E-brake adjuster screw.

ok...so im going thru the procedure to try and get my emergency brake adjusted so i can actually use it. And wouldnt ya know, the star wheel adjuster bolt has a cotter pin shoved thru it. Im guessing this is a precaution of the pevious owner since there was no mention of a cotter pin here
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/bob_tindel/e-brake.htm

Looks like ill have to remove the caliper and rotor to adjust the e-brake.

is the cotter pin put there by the factory?

thanks

the cotter pin goes thru the castlenut on the end of the cable. they are in the front. the star wheel is at the rear, on both sides, and there is no pin thru them. except for yours of course.

Mr. Walker...thank you for the reply. your advice is greatly appreciated and respected.

when you say "front" do you mean engine side of the wheel? Looking in the hole I saw what i thought was a star wheel adjuster. I had the hole positioned almost center of the caliper. So from the factory, I should not be able to see a cotter pin in there? or is the cotter pin behind the star wheel? Sorry about all this but this is the first time ive attempted this. I already have my wheels back on. I painted my lug nuts tho, so the day was not a complete loss Thanks again.

What he means is that when you are looking at the wheel side on, the nut with the cotter pin is on the side of the wheel toward the front of the car, and the star wheel to adjust the position of the emergency brake shoes is toward the rear of the car. The cotter pin at the end of the the cable may break when you remove it (mine did). I found that the PO had reversed the correct up-down position of one of the star wheel bolts, so if you have trouble adjusting the brake shoes with a screw driver through the hole, remove the brake disc hub to make sure they both point in the right up-down direction
