What is faster, a 3.2 carrera or a boxter?
 

Ok I had to bring this up. While driving home from work, cruising on the freeway, I notice a boxter driving slightly aggressive. I've always thought that people with boxsters don't quite drive them very fast. So I thought I would have a little fun so we both get into a situation with a big stretch of open road and we both take off. What really suprised me is that we were perfectly matched. Neither one of us pulled faster than each other. So I eventually turned off the freeway and we went our separate ways. So was that supposed to be an even match or should one of us be faster than the other?

TAke it to the SD PCA DE or AX...there's plenty of Boxsters down there to screw with and they have good drivers....

They are actually pretty close. All things being equal, a stock, unmodified boxster will out-turn a stock 911 though.

I have a 2002 Boxster and an 87 Carrera and the Carrera seems to accelerate faster, but the Boxster is easier to drive fast, so its basically a tossup depending on driver. I can assure you I drive my Boxster pretty hard. Mike is right, take it to the track.

It totally depends on the driver and his skill. Last weekend, Jim was pulling low 60's in his old stock 911. The guy with the shiny new GT3 couldn't break 65. It isn't about the car, it's about the driver.

So get your car to a track -- she'll love you forever! :)

In a Drag race the 3.2L cars should out-drag the early boxsters, but only if you are really hammering the thing.

The Later Boxster S should be darn evenly matched, and I'm betting the brand new Boxster S would probably win.

I believe the top speed of Boxster's or maybe the boxster S is supposed to be around 155 or 160 while the top speed of a 3.2L G-50 car should be gearing limited to right at 150, so in the long run most boxsters should be darn close in a straight line to the 3.2L cars if they are stock.

Braking and handling will probably bring the Boxster out on top because of the weight distribution, tires, suspension, etc...

But Because they are so close, anything that's not in a straight line will be due more to the drivers.

off the line the boxter s would kill the 915 equipped 3.2L...

No matter what the figures, the 3.2 feels faster to me.

For me it is the sensation that counts.

Despite being a convertible, the Boxster and 3.2 Carrera weigh pretty much the same (stock). The early Boxsters had 201hp. 2000 and newer base Boxsters were 218hp (?). '03 base Boxsters were 228hp and brand new base Boxsters are 240hp.

I can't remember exact hp number for 3.2 Carrera (I think 200 and then 217?), but my point is power to weight for both cars is pretty much the same....despite the base Boxsters being referred to as "underpowerd" cars. I have to say even my "lowly" 2.5 Boxster feels pretty quick. (..albeit in a different way than the 3.2 Carrera.)

231 horsepower in my ROW- outrun a regular boxster in a straight line? - no problem.

Regradless of whether the stats show about equal HP and weight ( true enough)....the actual acceleration numbers as tested by various magazines show them to be fairly equal. Steve Masraum's text is accurate as to which models we're talking about and their differences.
