reverse motion "click", help!

I've had this car about 2 months, really happy with it so far.

Seems to be an extremely well cared for TL, not a drop of oil anywhere, and runs like a champ.

However, one thing, I hope it's minor, and probably is.

When I roll down my long driveway in reverse, either in reverse gear, or in neutral, I hear this "click, click, click". Seems to be coming from the right front or right middle area, but it's hard to tell the exact location of the sound. Then I roll it forward, in gear or out of gear, no click at all.

I'm thinking it's break related, but breaks work great and the pads show lots of life left.

Anyone have some ideas for me to help trace this down?

tnx, Bill

You say you roll downhill, this is just a guess but if you "cover" the brakes as you roll your disc pads may be moving in the calipers and clicking against the back of the caliper. (Covering the brakes means you have your foot lightly on the brake pedal exerting little pressure.) The reason it doesn't do it just once as you start to roll backwards could be because the rear rotors may be very slightly out of alignment or have a rough/smooth section on them and snatch then release, snatch then release. Lots of ifs and maybes here but unless you get someone to listen close to the outside the car as you roll back the noise will be difficult to trace. Try reversing on a flat piece of ground without having your foot "covering" the brake pedal to eliminate the above.

Good Luck,

If it's from the back it would probably be the cv joints, which can wear into a pattern and not click when loaded (going forward). Put the front up in the air and spin the tires.
