Drivers door

First date with the forum. I have a 1981 911SC, German spec. I have three questions about the drivers door. 1) There is a support shaft running from the front top of the door to 2/3rds down the door at the aft end. This strut or shaft is installed on both doors but the hardware is missing on the drivers side causing the shaft to bounce around. Not good, can somebody tell me what the shaft is called and reference the parts from some publication/ web site. (pictures attached) 2) I have electric mirrors but the wires were cut in the drivers door frame previous to me getting the car (Nov 2013). Are there kits for this and where is the switch if there is a switch to select left or right mirror as I have one toggle on the drivers door, forward top near the window i assume is for directional control. (picture attached) 3) When you open the drivers door, there is a key lock within the frame (top at the height of the door handle), two wires running inside the door and into the car. Is this central locking or an alarm or what? (picture attached look at the top and bottom of the inside door photo) | ||

Welcome! 1. I'm pretty sure the rod in question connects the push button / rotary knob door lock to the mechanism at the aft edge of the door. Its been a while since I've had my door open. Here's the PET diagram: 2. I don't know about the wiring kits--you might need to get a good set from a dismantler (like dC Auto) if you can't buy new here. Part 33 in the following diagrams. That is the mirror control near the quarter window on the door. You're missing the top "dome" shaped part. Part 24. The control switch (alternating left / right mirror) is on the lower lip of the dash under the oil temp / pressure gauge. 3. That's the factory alarm. I recommend you leave that alone unless you have the key. Best, Dave

Pelican does sell that harness, but its a Porsche special order ($275)--http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/pel_search_2014.cgi?SUPERCAT_FLAG=Y&make=POR&Context_make=&please_wait=N&LastVisited_input=0813&Previous_Section=&forumid=&threadid=&command=DWsearch&description=91161216504&I1.x=0&I1.y=0. I'd definitely look for a used harness. Best, Dave

the rod is actually the rusty one in the first picture and the vacant hole in the second picture toward the bottom. The Alarm response was interesting, not sure what I can do about that, e.g. does it work, do I have the key, what would I do with it if it did work! The schematic for the mirror has left me thinking I guess I have some wires to chase. Thank you. I will call this first run a success, thanks to Dave! Last edited by mweist; 06-22-2014 at 05:27 PM.. That's a side impact beam. -J ETA: search side impact or intrusion beams here. Looks like a beam that was added after the fact. Maybe when the car was federalized.

Thanks, You are 100% correct, now I just need to procure the attachment hardware for the one side, as the other is still installed. Thank you.

The side impact bar is definitely something that was added, so just buy another example of whatever fastener you see on the other side and replace it. It's not a Porsche part. Porsche didn't use to sell alarm keys separately from the switch, so if you don't have a key (should be the Hul brand, I think) you may be out of luck. You could always replace the switch if you want the alarm to work. When buying a used mirror wiring harness, try to find something from about the same year, or close to it. JR
