Cams timing questions !

Hello !
I am not sure about my process !
I try to do the timing like the Wayne book explaine but I think I mist some thing about it ( my understanding of english ), My cams is Solex cams and my engine is 2.7 L with RS pistons.
my setting cams is 4.3 mm.
whe I turn the cam with the tool the pîn off the valve touch the piston before I can read 4.3 mm on the dial,
where is my problem ?
Ray

You started at cylinder #1 at Z1 firing position, and then turned 360deg to Z1 cylinder #1 overlap to set #1 cam timing correct ?

Yes, RoninLB
This is my process !
The cam is in good side and piston in good position...

High-lift, high-duration Camshaft Timing left side
1. Line up crank @ Z1.
2. Clamp tensioner idler arm.
3. Dot on left and right hand cam in up position.
4. Install rocker arm #1.
5. Adjust valve .10mm (.004 in)
6. Attach dial indicator to #1 (depressed at least .4 in)
7. Install small dowel pin into obvious hole.
8. Tighten camshaft nut to final torque 110 lb/in.
9. Rotate crank 360° lining up Z1 mark. (note how far dial gauge moves). Camshaft should have rotated 180°.
10. Hold cam securely w/camshaft tool and remove nut with crows foot.
11. Remove dowel pin.
12. Rotate cam until valve overlap is reached. (Solex cams ) .17 inch nominal or 4.3mm.
13. Replace pin.
14. Rock the camshaft back and forth to check backlash.
15. Hold camshaft and tighten nut.
16. Rotate crank 720° Z1 should be lined up. Indicator should be in range.
all is done and i begin to adjust exhaust valve #1 and I rotated for the next and check for 720° and the valve touch the piston...

I don't know what I do wrong but some thing i mist...
it is new cams with new pistons (RS)...
Thanks
Ray

Technique sounds correct to me. You may want to post this on the Engine Rebuild Forum.

Do you have only the number 1 intake rocker installed?

Hi Raynald,
Are you sure you have the left cam in the left position and the right on the right side? Waynes book has a diagram showing which cam is left and which one is right.
The RS pistons should clear the Solex cams without a problem,
are you positive they are RS pistons?

I can't think of hard answer. Is it a possibility that the pistons are installed wrong ?
