Model Airplanes and Porsches

On Sunday, while out riding on the SC Chocolate Kiss, I got a whiff of a smell that reminded me of the model airplanes I used to fly in my youth. These were the single cylinder propeller motors of model airplanes, - a very distinctive smell from the exhaust.

Does anyone know what kind of fuel powered those little 5cc (or where they smaller?) motors? They were two cycle motors, and didn't use oil (the fuel must have had some sort of lubricant mixed into the fuel).

I've read that the memory of smell is one of the longer-laster memories - and boy did this one prove that. I haven't smelled that smell since I was perhaps 15 years old (and that was over 45 years ago)!!!!

I believe the 2-stroke fuel is a mix of castor oil, nitromethane, and methanol. Mostly methanol.

hi andras

the fuel is a blend- including an oil in the mix.

the engines go mucher larger now, and there are four strokes. and ones with spark ignition.

i did it 20 years ago and have bought some kits over the last 5-10 years but never have time so they are collecting dust in the attic.

Andras- You might want to do a search in the Off Topic Forum under remote control or model airplanes. I asked a question about R/C Cars in there a few weeks ago and there were a couple of guys that posted pics of planes. Just thought you might be interested....

It's a mix of methyl alcohol, nitromethane and either Klotz or castor oil. Castor oil is preferred since it will not break down an burn if you run the motor too lean.

I'm building a plane now that will fit into the trunk of my SC.
It will have to have a 2 piece wing and a detachable horizontal stabilizer.

RC used to be mostly glow fuel powered engines. With the leap in electric technology the trend is smaller and battery powered.

I'll post the plane in the trunk in the coming months.
