Put a new fan belt in when I bought it 22 months ago, adjusted it once (1 shim at first and 2 shims a few months ago) and tonight it committed Hari Kari. I carry a spare, and it crapped out a few hundred feet from the house, so no big deal, but is that a normal life?? I'll get another spare tomorrow. Any thoughts on life expectancy.

- was it new when installed or had it been laying around for years?
- was it adjusted right at all times in the last 22 months? - how many miles on it?

? Supposed to be 6 shims total at all times, configured in whatever way works to tighten (inside or outside)...not one or two. Maybe thats the problem...

Six total, 1 out, five in, the 2 out and 4 in. It was a Conti belt from Pelican.

So 20 months is abnormal? I would have thought so. Anyway I keep a spare. BTW, the alternator is tight. End of discussion, thanks all.. Hugh

you got the shims...good. Check the belt to see if it rubs on the fan housing at the bottom when you give it some RPMS...it can do this is the fan housing is slightly misadjusted.

Thanks Sonic, I'll look today. I assume I should do this without the engine running? Just kidding.

I think you have to take in consideration a lot of factors. You have a know quality belt and you apparently installed and adjusted it correctly. As mentioned, maybe the engine itself is not quite right. You could inspect both sides of the v for any evidence.
And, how hard do you drive? I would think high rpm drivers and racers would change their belt twice a year, if not more. |
