Carpet Install Help

Can someone give some advice on installing this piece?

My car did not have this piece originally. it had the later fiberglass pieces with carpet. I think I can use these though, but I don't have a reference for installing. It looks rather dificult with the heater hose and such under there. Does it only glue on the door frame and then the bottom half? Do I glue the outer flap at all or is it totally loose?

Thanks, John

That piece doesn't look right. Is the footwell blower under the carpet?

If you got the appbiz carpet kit that piece looks like the piece to use in the back quarter panel under the back window. It replaces vinyl or leather rear quarter panels.

The picture is from someone elses post on carpet installation.
I ordered a kit to cover through year '84 through AppBiz, but he says my car should not have the fiberglass pieces, that they were probably added. VE Snyder has the exact same car except it's an '83 and it utilizes these pieces because it doesn't have the fiberglass pieces mine has.
Yes it has the small footwell blowers in each kick space. I was hoping to leave off the fiberglass pieces and install these carpets.

John, I just pulled the carpet off of the molded fiberglass and glued on new.

The carpet piece in the picture is not for that area though. It is for the area you have in the for sale/wanted section

The kit comes with the pieces for the foot blower covers.
They are sort of rounded cut pieces that are appropriate size to cut and fit.

Jerry,
Go to here to see the full install of the carpet in that picture http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_interior_restoration/int_carpet_install.htm I'm pretty sure it's in the correct place. I bought the kit off eBay from AppBiz and I was short the piece in the wanted/for sale section and I have this kick space problem. He offered to have me return the whole kit, but I already started installing some of the pieces. A few e-mails later I've got nothing so I'm trying to solve my problem myself. If I can't get something simple I'll buy some carpet from Auto's Internation.

I see how it is in the pic. I could be wrong. If I am then I put mine in wrong.

The thing is there is no reason to have a seam in the area that
piece is in. The pieces that go in the back area does need a seam.

When I replaced the piece in the rear quarter it also had a fiberglass piece. Mine had vinyl attached but it had a similar seam to the one in the pic.

Again I may be wrong but I feel confident that piece with the seam should be in the back.

John I just did my whole car with the same kit using the same pieces and I did not have any missing.

I hate to say it but I think the tech article is wrong.

I removed each piece from my car and labeled it.
I then matched each piece with a new piece from the kit before I cut or glued anything.

John here is a pic of the back. It is a little hard to see with the light but you can see the piece with the seam

Jerry,
Remember mine is a cab so the back is different. The fiberglass pieces in the back held the speakers and it came with pieces which fit perfect.

The back may differ but that doesn't make the front use a piece with the seam. I really think this is the problem.

I think this should be clarified by the appbiz. I know others have had problems figuring out what goes where.

It should have instructions.

John before I did anything else I would talk to the guys at appbiz.

I am sure they would give you the straight scoop and if you needed to replace a couple of pieces maybe they would work with you..

At least give them a chance before going somewhere else.

I looked through the tech article. I still see the area in the cab that is similar to the coupe under the rear window. It could use a seam there.

The thing is I had carpet for the footwell blowers that were about the right size.

I would like to know the answer to this as well.

That looks like what I have in my 78sc targa. The carpet was glued to the footwell sheet metal and that seam, at least on mine is a map pocket. The wooden floorboard needs to be removed or at least loosened up so that that flap of carpeting (that is sitting on top of it in your picture) is laying under it and held in place by the wooden floor board. I will try to get you a picture from my car. But the carpet looks right..is there a map pocket at the seam?

It is a pocket. Bend it out to form a pocket the you will see how it fits. The floorboad does need removing. I used 3M Super Trim Adhesive and it was strong enough to hold the pocket in place with no additional fasteners. The Porsche Factory Manuals recommend a scew at the back of the pocket to keep the pocket shape. As I said, i was able to do it with glue only.
