San Antonio Pelican Party
Here is what is going this weekend.
Day One 830am - 630 pm Car up - oil drained Engine/tranny dropped Oil pressure sender replaced Crankase breather gasket and hose replaced Oil Cooler Thermostat O ring replaced. CIS intake boots replaced CIS manifold gaskets replaced Valve job done Valve cover gaskets replaced (silicon) Valve covers cleaned and reinstalled Shift shaft seal removed and replaced ( and most likely damaged in the process) transmission cleaned off All remaining air conditioner pieces removed Oil lines from external thermostat replaced Distributor cap and rotor replaced New fuel filter Pretty good for a first day. We aren't quite up to NOVA gang status but for three guys and a really friendly dog we did pretty well. My appreciation and blessings go out to Bruce and Pete. Bruce (Rikao4) lent us the use of the shop behind his truck driving school. Pete is the schools professional mechanic -- this would have been impossible without Pete.

Good work. I can't help but think about that photo and how it looks like a crime scene (dead body, blood every where, and the internal organs on some sadistic display). But seriously it looks like you guys did a lot and had some fun. I'd like to do the same to my SC.
Do you get up to TWS for DE's?

what/where is TWS? Texas "world" speedway?
It was good and bad. We made great time and got a lot of stuff done. We replaced every leaky sell known to man and two oil pipes. The previous owner did some shabby work. Only 4 fan nut washers were on. the oil pressure sender fell off when I touched it. It must have been barely tightened with the tip of someones finger. It took about half a turn to get off. The washer for it was laying next it in a big pile of oil and dirt. We did a quick valve job as well. We put everything back inside and cleaned her up. Now the good and the bad... The good news... Started on the first try The bad news... Ran like crap. I finally got the idle up to 750 RPM. Backfires with throttle. The vacuum leaks were fixed because I can shut the engine down by covering the snorkel with my hand. Maybe this thing is supposed to have vacuum leaks? Must be the timing or something. The wires checked good. I think I might have screwed up the valves on the valve job, but too loose shouldn't make it run this bad. There is noise from the #1 intake valves for sure. I suppose you have to push the envelope to find your limits. Everything else looks good. and NO LEAKS (yet)!!! Now it is in front of Jones Autowerks awaiting the insurance adjuster to come and inspect the damage I took last week. I'll let them identify my problem becuase I have no idea and neither did Bruce or Pete.

I just want to throw out another BIG THANK YOU to Bruce and Pete over at Loadmaster Truck driving school. This would have not been possible without them or their facilities. Pete is the man! Bruce is much better than he would ever admit to. Hopefully, we learned enough on my car so that we can cut into his someday soon.
Bruce helped the car lose about 10-20 pounds by helping me pull out all the remaining air conditioning bits. I know have an open smugglers box. Pete made some seals for the trunk floor and now I am A/C free which is either good or bad depending on how you look at it. I'm happy with that.

any thoughts on the problems? Would be nice. I don't know how you could change the timing just by installing a new dizzy cap.
BTW pelican sent the wrong fuel filter with there mx kit. I had my old one in a vice and it is crushed in on the sides but I had to reinstall it after realizing the threads weren't the same.

We could of used a little wisdom this weekend. We were two amateurs and a diesel mechanic. We did everythign fine, and then when the motor went back in....
It ran like crap. idles really low and backfires. Starts up everytime and doesn't quit until you kill it. Throttle responds slightly but then backfires. We were at a loss. It went to Jones Autowerks on a flatbed instead of under its own power. They'll have to sort it out. Quote:

Thank you Paul, but it is me, that wishes to thank you.
I had a absolute blast, one of the best weekends I have had in a long time. Those of you that have taken this plunge understand , I loved every minute of it. In reading many a post, some of the Pelican wisdom remained ,and thereby I was able to turn a wrench, pull that out, rewire this and connect those and get dirty. 2 days later and I still grin just thinking about it. I have admired the courage and talent of many a pelican here, and know now the water is just fine.Got real wet and look forward to jumping in real soon.Appreciate you letting me be a part of this.I went home a babbled like a kid recanting a wonderful adventure, I lost my fear, and am talking to Pete about "my drop". Paul,
Congratulations!! Wish I could have been there but I had too many things on that to do list from The Wife. I'm taking mine apart starting tomorrow (i'm only five days late on starting). Texas Moteur Speedway is located just East of College Station on Texas Highway 6. I cannot remember the best route out of San Antonio, but the map on mapquest (hope we send you the right way) dot com is bogus. There are some very nice Farm to Market roads and State Highways you could use to go north and east. Hope your situation gets ironed out! What clearance did you put on the valves? If you put too little clearance, could this cause the symptoms? I'm not sure I see anything else that you changed besides the filter.

Was the sensor re-attached to the outlet just below the tinwork? Yes, a bad O2 does cause problems.

Rika,
This does cause idle issues. The bung could be re-threaded and then yall could try this. I don't know if JB Weld would hold or if you would want to try and JB Weld in this area. I'm trying to remember what it causes...Hmmm on our cars it should go back to default if the O2 is disconnected. Did yall try that? Did the unit under the passenger's seat get disconnected somehow? 1981 SC enrichment Arggg! More 81 sc problems 1982---911SC Targa CIS,frequency Valve chech Relay under passenger seat '83SC

It might have caused an issue had it actually been connected. No, my o2 sensor is just a poor man's mixture sensing device if anything.
