				Alternatives to Porsche's OBD-II laptop?

			Hey everyone,

question for you... does anyone know if there is an alternative to Porsche's $10,000 laptop to access the OBD-II system in newer Porsches? I've heard from, i guess a source that I don't really trust, that there is no alternative if you want it to access every functions and do more than just read a few fault codes. I noticed pelican sells one or two OBD-II code readers, but I'm not sure what functions they'll access Also, I find it incredibly hard to believe that no one has come up with a way to use an actual PC laptop with some software and a link and do everything Porsche's laptop did. If anyone knows anything about this I'd really appreciate any answers. Thanks

Have you contacted some of the tuners? Sure they may have originally purchased the computer, but by now (what about 7 years) they ought to know there way around these programs if they are GOOD.

Just consider a bump since you've probably already gone down this route. Stephen always seems really helpful.

I actually ended up finding out that Baum Tools sells an I-scan with a porsche software package that a lot of dealers use becuase Porsche has limited sales of the PST3 since the PST2 was being sold of a dealer in Oregon. It ended up being a little more money than I wanted to spend, but I think it's going to be well worth it if it does everything they're saying it does.

No, well, yes and no. We have a Bosch Hammer at the shop which works fine for the RSA, this is me dragging my boss forward... he's really resistant to change and I think he's beenmaking excuses to not work on the newer cars. Recently though, myself and an ex employee offered to buy a large portion of the business and so we're trying to update some things and get ready to move into a new shop, and we have to start working on the new cars, and being able to do what the dealer does. So I decided we just had to have a way to do more than read faults on OBD-II cars, so this is mainly for 993s, boxsters, and 996s, although I was told the software for 997s and cayennes should be available in a few months.

That sounds like an excellent plan. I was just wondering, since I had a chance to use a hammer with my 90 C2, and was surprised how little it actually does. (With all the ramblings about the "mythical hammer", I figured it would do everything short of washing the car)

Do you know if the newer laptop units do anything different with the older cars? Thanks, and good luck with the business -Eric 90 C2 NER/PCA |
