Targa rear speaker shelf - not stereo?

I have a 78 sc, and the rear speakers appear to be mono. I only have 3 sets of speaker wires hooked up to the radio (don't see a 4th anywhere). I am getting sound out of both speakers in the rear shelf with the lone rear speaker wires hooked up to the right rear channel.

I find this kind of odd - was stereo speaker wiring to the rear shelf an option in '78?

I just stripped the interior out of my '79 SC and found only one cable(2 conductor) also. I think I read that the rear speakers were mono during this era. My car had additional newer wires fed under the floor mats that were actually hooked up to the junk speakers. The original red/black wire was no longer being used.

I am pulling two new speaker cables just in case, but I am not mounting speakers for now as I am installing RS carpet kit (new Alpine stereo/CD plus just two 6 1/2" Infinity door speakers is all I am putting back in).

It's agood idea to pull new wires anyway - you can use a better quality wire & it will be newer -- not that you'll get great sound from that location anyway, but...

What's the factory routing of the wires? Would I need to disassemble much of the interior to neatly run a new pair of wires?
