My possible new 911

Well sort of...
I have had this 1974 for almost a week, the real owner let me take it for a while and see if the car is what I want.
Overall I cannot compare the 1988 to the 1974 they are very much different. Yesterday I took the car in for a PPI. Nothing serious. The Engine checked out very well. The car is very quick and is almost what I am looking for, What I really want is a car with non-impact bumpers. the color is a serious matter of debate at the moment. The lady of the house hates the color and then I let her drive it with weak synchos on 1, 2 & 3 and tired brakes and old bushings she is pleading that I can't keep it. Here are some pics. What do you guys think?

Another fun part of this car is that I have every reciept of work done for the last 24 years.
Did you know that a Valve adj. with gaskets cost $25.07 in 1977!

If at all possible, try to do things that your wife likes. I wish I had involved my wife more in my Porsche buying.

I think you are very true on that note.
The car has been respayed a while back and at the moment the paint looks pretty old.

Comments on wife

Send her back.

Just kidding. My guess is that there is a Porsche for both of you.

I wish I could get my wife to drive mine.

Hey Tim,

Couldn't your wife just stick to the '88?

:)

What are your plans with the older versions?
Going to the AX? Hope to see you and your wife again soon. I am off the the Napa Valley again this weekend for a friend's winery opening (after the AX). I'm sure that I'll just HAVE to hit up the back country again!

the first 911 you make some if any sacrifices. the second car? you get exactly what you want. wait for the longhood. i am.

"the real owner let me take it for a while and see if the car is what I want."

- Wow. Most people will barely let you drive a car you want to buy. If he isn't a close friend you'll need to do something very nice for him.

Now -- do you like the color? ok with a bumper car?

The answer was no to both - wasn't it?

So, the next question is: how long will it take to find what you want, and do you want to drive this car in the meanwhile, including the hat whatever cash you had is now reduced by the cost of this car...

I'd wait.

The thing looks clean, if it's a good deal and you really want early-style bumpers do a backdate! Its got the chrome trim and narrow body, I think the color would look fantastic with R bumpers.

This is a no-brainer.

What they all said Tim. A happy spouse/gf makes for a happy Tim.

porschenut 03-10-2005 03:19 PM

Has she driven the 88? Does she like that? Try to determine if it's the worn bushings/synchros that give her trouble or if she just can't deal with the 915 in general. If it's the latter, you can forget the whole thing.

goat 03-10-2005 03:26 PM

Yep, you are all right thanks.
This Olive car goes back into the Martini glass. The owner said no hard feelings either way. The search will continue.
Going to miss the AX. We are Taking the 88 out for a trip waaay up the coast.
In the near future I'll have to host a drive in my neck of the woods.

randywebb 03-10-2005 08:07 PM

Buy him a gift. He let you hold onto the car way more than most would.

Think hard about what you really want and go get it.

(Hint: keep the shift tower, seats, suspension, and engine from your '88... buy an early car and transfer all that stuff to it...)

bigchillcar 03-10-2005 08:32 PM

sure looks an awful lot like my '74...couldn't be happier with mine. over three years active on this board and i'm pretty much resigned to the typical knee-jerk reaction most on this board have towards mid-year cars in general. hope it finds a good home.

A wise person once said, "if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy."

I'd pass....

MichiganMat 03-11-2005 08:36 AM

...but its so purdy!

Its got character, lots of good character. Bushings are cheap! Trans rebuilds are easy. I say keep it.
